Position Details
  • Location: Bedford
  • Salary: £26,780 – £31,415 per annum (DOE and qualifications)
  • Annual leave: 27 days + bank holidays
  • Hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year
  • Contract: Permanent – Full Time

About the Role

We are currently seeking an Instructor in Mechanical Engineering to join the Engineering Department at The Bedford College Group.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver practical instruction and assessment in fitting, milling, turning, and maintenance, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Oversee workshop safety, maintain equipment, control hazards, and ensure health and safety regulations are followed.
  • Prepare practical learning materials, support classroom delivery, and facilitate resource‑based learning across multiple programmes.
  • Administer quality assurance duties, maintain inventory records, and complete administrative tasks such as registers and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with team members, attend meetings, uphold safeguarding and EDI standards, and contribute to a safe, inclusive, and high‑performing learning environment.
About You
  • Level 2 qualification in the specialism with GCSEs in Maths and English (Grade A–C); up‑to‑date industry knowledge and workshop safety practices.
  • Willingness to work towards teaching, assessor, and verifier qualifications; able to deliver high‑quality learning experiences and demonstrate practical tasks.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to work with young people and diverse groups; teamwork oriented.
  • Organisational and reliable; able to manage workload independently, meet deadlines, maintain equipment, and demonstrate high job performance with flexibility and punctuality.
  • Committed to safeguarding responsibilities, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and willing to undertake first aid and professional development for student welfare and safety.

The successful candidate will be subject to a thorough vetting process, including an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references. The role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
