Instructor, John Deere Tech - FT
Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Associate Dean and Dean of Advanced Technology and Skilled Trades, the John Deere Tech Instructor is responsible for developing and implementing courses in the John Deere Tech program. Courses may take place in classroom, laboratory, online, and hybrid formats. This is a full-time regular position for the upcoming 2026-2027 Academic Year.
Essential Functions
- Provide instruction and develop courses in assigned subject areas.
- Practice and encourage safety.
- Provide instruction to a diverse student population according to the objectives of each course in the John Deere Tech program.
- This instructor will utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom/laboratory that include but are not limited to lectures, small groups, indoor and outdoor demonstrations, and laboratory activities. Lab activities may include “mock‑up” components as well as “live” work on public customer or College‑owned vehicles and equipment.
- Prepare and administer student evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
- Remain current in events and developments related to the subject area. Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as in‑service activities, conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self‑study.
- Participate in division and college meetings and committees.
- Participate in program Workforce Leadership Team (WLT) meetings.
- Maintain security of College vehicles, equipment, facilities, and materials.
- Serve as an Academic Advisor for students. Tasks include advising students on academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and division/college policies.
- Develop/Revise Course Curriculum and Educational Materials: Develop and/or revise course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies on the approved college curriculum form. Also develop, revise, and maintain classroom/laboratory policies, grading structures, and strategies. Recommend textbooks.
- Function as a member of the John Deere Tech Program, Transportation Division, Instructional Division, and SCC teams.
- Interact with colleagues, students, staff, supervisors, and the public in a manner that promotes a positive image of the program and the College and supports recruitment, placement, orientation. This includes support of SCC Policies, Goals, and Strategic Plans.
- Maintain and upgrade the John Deere Tech classroom/laboratory instructional facilities and equipment. Verify maintenance of facilities and equipment.
- Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors): Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction or his/her designee.
- Professional Development: Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan for professional development and improvement.

Marginal Functions
- Operate and utilize as part of the teaching process appropriate audio‑visual equipment, computers, and learning management system(s), including but not limited to PowerPoint, Microsoft Office products, Canvas, etc.
- Provide information and data that will assist in the preparation of budgets, course schedules, vehicle condition reports, and other required reports.
- Serve as a substitute instructor within the Transportation division when needed, as assigned by the Associate Dean or Dean.
- Serve as a technical advisor from the John Deere Tech program to assist other programs at the College.
- May be required to perform associated duties, functions, or assignments in other divisions/programs/areas as required.
- Perform other College functions and duties as assigned.
- Must be able to work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as required. Work schedules may vary.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Current knowledge of, and work experience in, the Diesel Ag Equipment Service Technology field, preferably with a focus on modern John Deere equipment. This will include heating/air conditioning; electrical/electronic systems & components; diesel & gasoline engines; hydraulic/hydrostatic systems & components; powertrain systems & components; diesel & gasoline fuel systems & components; and seeding & planting, harvesting, tillage, and precision agriculture equipment.
- Be able to operate the tools, equipment, and diagnostic equipment used in modern Diesel Ag Equipment Systems.
- Be able to demonstrate all types of processes required of a Diesel Ag Equipment Service technician for the particular courses assigned to teach.
- Ability to develop and incorporate a variety of teaching strategies and techniques in the classroom/laboratory.
- Ability to devise and utilize appropriate evaluation methods for classroom/laboratory use.
- Be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time (one to three hours) when supervising lab work and during class times (one to three hours).
- Be able to lift from the floor to five feet high, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, and move tables, chairs, and media equipment when necessary.
- Ability and experience in the safe operation of tractors, combines, and consumer products.
- Ability to step up onto, climb over, and into tractors, combines, and other equipment to demonstrate or inspect and evaluate students’ work.
- Ability to qualify for auto insurance coverage to meet travel requirements for the coordination of the cooperative education.
- Possess a working knowledge of the Hazard Communication Standard/Hazard and Chemical Right‑to‑Know laws and regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing, in person, and on the phone.
- Ability to use basic computer skills.
- The individual must possess the above skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in Diesel Technology or a directly related field.
- Two (2) years of recent experience in the Transportation service field.
- A John Deere Ag Equipment Certification in the areas of instruction must be obtained within 6 months of hire. A Pathway to John Deere Ag Equipment Master Certification must be established within 2 years of hire.
Desired Qualifications
- Baccalaureate Degree in a mechanized Agricultural or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Two (2) years of post‑secondary teaching experience.
- John Deere Master Tech or Master Instructor.
- Recent John Deere work experience related to the area of assigned instruction.
Salary: $56,100 (2025-2026 rate)
Benefits
SCC BEN Dollars – eligible employees: full-time status. Regular employees with an FTE of 0.75 or greater will be eligible for SCC Ben Dollars. All employees will be required to elect a health insurance option. If the cost of insurance coverage selected by an employee exceeds the SCC Ben Dollars available, all additional costs will be withheld from the employee’s paycheck. Any SCC Ben Dollars that the employee does not elect to use for the purchase of dependent health and dental insurance will be paid to the employee in cash at $0.93 per $1.00 benefit dollar. All amounts paid are subject to withholding for income and employment taxes, but not subject to the College’s contribution toward the Retirement Savings Plan – Group Retirement Account (GRA).
Posting Detail: This is a full‑time regular position with an implied 40‑hour work week, based on a 175‑day work calendar. Teaching assignments are scheduled and approved by the College between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday based on the instructional work calendar. Scheduled special activities, emergencies, or temporary schedule changes may require hours outside of the regular workday or workweek.
