Job summary

Management & Training Corporation (MTC) seeks a horticulture instructor for Bay Correctional Facility in Panama City, FL. You will provide instruction to inmates, develop objectives, and ensure compliance with ACA, MTC, FDOC and DMS directives.

The role requires a bachelor’s degree, an approved teaching certificate, and horticulture experience. Strong classroom management and knowledge of hydroponics are beneficial.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Florida teaching certificate or comparable authority required.
• Must have horticulture experience and/or related education.
• Knowledge in hydroponics, seed germination, etc. is helpful.

Responsibilities

• Deliver competency-based instruction through classroom and laboratory management in occupational program areas.
• Develop performance objectives and tests per program content.
• Review and adapt instructional materials to reach mastery of required competencies.
• Plan activities to initiate budget requests and ensure equipment and supplies are available.
• Monitor motivation, discipline, and learning difficulties to improve inmate behavior.
• Evaluate and maintain records of inmate progress toward objectives.
• Adhere to facility procedures and complete applicable forms.
• Promote positive social skills by modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when needed.
• Maintain accountability of inmates and property and follow safety practices.

Position summary: The horticulture instructor is responsible for providing instruction to inmates in accordance with approved curricula. She/he provides inmates with basic direction in compliance with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, Management & Training Corporation (MTC), Florida Department of Corrections (FDOC) and Florida Department of Management Services (DMS) directives.

Essential Responsibilities

• Deliver individualized competency-based instruction through classroom and laboratory management in the occupational program areas taught to inmates.
• Develop performance objectives and criterion-referenced tests in accordance with established program content.
• Review, select and adapt instructional materials to help individuals reach mastery of the competencies required for entry, advancement and upgrading occupations.
• Plan activities to efficiently initiate budget requests to assure that all equipment, supplies, and materials are available to support a progressive training schedule.
• Monitor motivation, discipline, and learning difficulties to bring about positive changes in the behavior of inmates.
• Evaluate and maintain records of the inmate’s progress toward completion of pre-established performance objectives.
• Execute all applicable forms to adhere to facility procedures.
• Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
• Maintain accountability of inmates and property; adhere to safety practices.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

Education And Experience Requirements

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
• A valid teaching certificate from the Florida Department of Education or a comparable authority is necessary.
• Must have horticulture experience and/or education in related area.
• Knowledge in areas of hydroponics, seed germination, etc. is helpful.

Two (2) Years Of Relevant Teaching Experience Is Preferred.

A valid driver’s license in the state of Florida with an acceptable driving record is required, unless waived by management.
