Job summary

Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) seeks an instructor to prepare and teach Forklift Operator courses, fostering an optimum learning environment and supporting student success. The role includes day/evening/weekend teaching, classroom and lab delivery, and collaboration with faculty and staff.

Under supervision, the instructor will maintain records, ensure compliance with college rules, and participate in professional development to advance teaching skills and the college mission.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in a Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field.
• Forklift Operator Trainer certification from NSC/OSHA/NC DOL/SHCNC/NC State–IES; Train the Trainer cert considered.
• Minimum of three years in logistics, construction, or related industry.
• At least three years of supervisory experience.
• Proficiency with MS Office software.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and teach forklift-related courses and departmental courses.
• Provide professional development activities to maintain currency in the field.
• Oversee facilities, equipment, and student records; ensure safety and compliance.

Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. He/she will be responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation and interest in the total affairs of the college.

Under general supervision, this individual will prepare and teach Forklift Operator courses. The purpose of the instruction is to equip students with the necessary occupation-specific and employability skills for success in the workplace. The faculty member must be able to instruct a wide variety of topics within the curriculum in the classroom and in a practical environment, and may be required to teach day, evening and/or weekend hours.

Duties/Functions

Teaching

Prepare & teach departmental courses to include:

• developing learner centered lesson plans
• employing teaching strategies & instructional materials for different learning styles
• incorporating, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments
• creating and modeling a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population
• preparing, distributing and utilizing instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate
• conducting appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs/general education as appropriate

Professional Development

Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by:

• participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation
• participating in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies

Administration

Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records to include:

• maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment
• providing for the security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions
• maintaining student records (e.g., grades and attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using a variety of technology-based programs (e.g., Colleague, WebAdvisor, Canvas)
• complying with all applicable college, state and federal rules and regulations

Student Support

Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:

• addressing student concerns in a timely manner
• promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success
• referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate
• Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
• Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education Required

• Associate’s degree in a Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field from an institutionally accredited college.
• Forklift Operator Trainer certification from one of the following certifying entities; National Safety Council ( NSC ), OSHA , NC Department of Labor ( NCDOL ), Safety & Health Council of NC ( SHCNC ), NC Industrial Extension Service (NC State – IES ). Train the Trainer certification from employer will be considered.

Education Preferred

• Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Technology, Logistics, Engineering, Machining, or other related fields from an institutionally accredited college/university preferred.

Experience Required

• A minimum of three years working in logistics, construction, or related industry.
• At least three years of supervisory experience.
• Record of demonstrated ability to train and evaluate powered industrial truck operators is required. Instructor must have the knowledge, training, and experience, to train students and evaluate their competence.
• Proficiency with MS® Office software.
• Teaching and/or industry training experience in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars.

Experience Preferred

• Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes
• Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems
