Job summary

Texas State Technical College seeks an experienced instructor to deliver high-quality Electrical Power & Controls instruction on-site. You will design syllabi, lead classes, and provide mentorship to students in a practical lab setting.

Qualifications

  • Verifiable work experience in Electrical Power & Controls or closely related industry.
  • Ability to explain and demonstrate electrical safety procedures including PPE selection and lock out/tag out methods.
  • Recognition of nominal voltage and approach distances for PPE.
  • Experience with electrical wiring diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Familiarity with NEC requirements and motor control knowledge.
  • Ladder logic and PLCs knowledge for control systems.

TSTC faculty deliver approved curriculum, content, and assessments in an applied learning environment. Responsibilities include facilitation of activities and discussions that engage a range of learning styles with targeted guidance and mentorship to students. Faculty will also interpret and administer assessments, and offer constructive feedback to support student growth and learning outcomes. A key part of the role is to integrate technology effectively to enrich the educational experiences. Faculty act as ambassadors for their programs and TSTC. Faculty will demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence, Accountability, Service and Integrity with internal and external stakeholders, customers, students and members of the community.

INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY

Prepare and deliver high quality instruction and facilitate the learning of students. Develop appropriate course syllabi and instructional plans, and organize daily classes utilizing a variety of creative/innovative techniques.

INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT

Fulfill assigned schedule, maintain accurate student records, maintain instructional environment with emphasis on safety, equipment security where applicable, and ensure opportunities for student/participant evaluation.

STUDENT RETENTION AND PLACEMENT

Performs student advisement such that students are provided with timely, accurate, and comprehensive information. Collaborate with the Office of Student Success to ensure students receive current information on tutoring and other programs designed to increase retention.

PROGRAM RECRUITMENT & PROMOTION

Participate in related tours and recruitment events. Assist in department/program planning for recruitment.

TEAMWORK & SERVICE

Demonstrates a willingness to be of service and exhibits pleasant and courteous behavior toward customers (students, parents, employers, and media), organizational coworkers, and other general public contacts. Maintains flexibility, including availability for evening, weekend, or summer assignment, as appropriate; able to work effectively in a team environment; commitment to the mission, vision and values of the college.

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

The core competencies for direct instructional delivery in an applied learning environment can be condensed into a few overarching categories: TEACHING & LEARNING: Deliver high quality instruction and facilitate the learning of students. Organize daily classes utilizing a variety of creative/innovative techniques. Tailor teaching methods to diverse learning styles and needs. MENTORSHIP & COACHING: Understanding and empathizing with student experiences. Providing personalized guidance and support. Articulating ideas clearly and fostering open communication. ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK: Creating and utilizing assessments to provide constructive feedback and guide learning. Continually evaluating and improving teaching strategies. TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION: Effectively using technology to enhance learning experiences.

Required Skills, knowledge, and certifications or licenses
  • Verifiable work experience a in the Electrical Power & Controls or closely related industry
  • Ability to explain and demonstrate knowledge of the following: Electrical safety procedures including PPE selection and lock out/tag out methods
  • Recognition of nominal voltage, energized parts, approach distances for selection of proper NFPA 70E required PPE
  • Electrical wiring diagrams, schematics and blueprints
  • Utilization of electrical industry specific tools, meters, and testing equipment
  • DC and AC electrical circuits, systems, and components
  • Electrical formulas used to calculate electrical values such as volts, ohms, amperes, power, inductance, capacitance as applicable to DC and AC circuits
  • Selection, installation and maintenance of electric motor control systems and components
  • Ladder logic as related to the proper selection, installation, operation and maintenance of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
  • Identification of electrical motor characteristics for both DC and AC electric motors
  • Application of the National Electric Code (NEC) to electrical installations
  • Identification of electrical distribution and transmission systems, associated components, and their uses
  • Identification of various types of transformers and calculate primary and secondary values
  • Basic transformer connections associated with single-phase and three-phase electrical systems
  • Electrical formulas used to calculate values for phase angle, real power, apparent power, reactive power, and power factor
  • Selection, installation and maintenance of various types of electric motor speed control and drives for DC and AC motors
  • Installation requirements for proper cable terminations including shielding
  • Electrical system component testing and maintenance procedures
Preferred Skills, knowledge, and certifications or licenses
  • TDLR Journeyman or Master Electrician License
  • Verifiable work experience with Allen Bradley PLCs and Studio 5000 Software Suite
  • Verifiable work experience with AutoCAD Software Suite
  • Knowledge and ability to explain and apply fundamental switchgear protective relaying equipment with applications NCCER Electrical Certifications
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certifications
Education and Experience Required

Associate degree in a closely related field and demonstrated qualifications in the technology’s teaching discipline. Verifiable professional experience may be accepted in lieu of other requirements as approved by the Vice Chancellor who oversees academic programs, or his/her designee. Preferred Bachelor’s degree in a closely related teaching discipline.
