Responsibilities

Job description

Work Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours per week; Monday-Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m.; Schedule varies depending on department needs; Non-standard hours, including evenings and occasional weekends are required.

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Instructor - Athletics (Expect Excellence) is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading instructional activities within the Expect Excellence program. The position oversees daily program activities, ensures participant safety, maintains equipment and supplies, and delivers structured, engaging instruction regularly to elementary-age students occasionally to middle and high-school age students. Instructors serve as positive role models and work collaboratively with program leadership to provide high-quality programming that supports skill development, teamwork, and personal growth.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no formal supervisory authority over City employees. The incumbent provides direct supervision, instruction, and leadership to program participants during activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Develops lesson plans, prepares supply lists, and coordinates program logistics.
  2. Develops structured, engaging, and age-appropriate lesson plans throughout the semester.
  3. Leads and instructs in assigned courses.
  4. Completes required documentation including hours worked, class sizes, and program photographs.
  5. Monitors and oversees daily activities within assigned Expect Excellence programs.
  6. Maintains order and positive behavior during practices and classes.
  7. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil and evaluates each pupil’s growth and performance.
  8. Serves as a positive role model by demonstrating professionalism and integrity.
  9. Selects and requisitions books, instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  10. Sets up, distributes, collects, and maintains equipment and supplies.
  11. Controls the storage and use of City-owned property; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs; monitors equipment condition and reports replenishment or maintenance needs.
  12. Ensures the safety and well-being of participants by enforcing program rules and safety guidelines.
  13. Communicates with parents of minor pupils’ progress and necessary practice schedule.
  14. Maintains positive public relations in the community.
  15. Maintains current professional certifications as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Bachelor’s degree in related OR equivalent recent relevant full-time work experience (one year of full-time recent relevant work experience for every one year of college).
  2. Experience and education in specific related fields.
  3. Current and valid drivers license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Experience developing lesson plans or structured educational programs.
  2. Previous instructional, teaching, or enrichment program experience with youth.
  3. Advanced education, certification, or formal training in the area of instruction.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near video display. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Employees may be required to work in extreme outdoor environments.
