Job description

Instructor/Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics - Multiple Positions

Location: Notre Dame

Open Date: 2026-08-01

Deadline: Nov 20, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Department of Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics (ACMS) in the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame is accepting applications for multiple faculty positions, which are expected to be filled this year. The search will focus on candidates appropriate for the rank of assistant professor, but exceptional candidates at the rank of associate professor or full professor will also be considered. These positions are supported by the Data, AI, and Computing Initiative, and the selected candidates will be affiliated with this Initiative and/or its research institutes or centers.

Although we are searching broadly in all areas of applied and computational mathematics and statistics, preference will be given to applicants whose research is connected with at least one of the following areas:

  • Data-driven approaches: physics-informed regularization, operator learning, state-space models, scientific machine learning, and algorithms to solve linear and nonlinear systems and differential equations. Additionally, research on optimization, uncertainty quantification, and machine learning techniques for multi-fidelity, multi-scale, and multi-physics problems is also of interest.
  • Quantum computing: quantum algorithms, quantum machine learning, quantum advantage, and quantum data science.

ACMS has research groups in applied mathematics, statistics and data science, and AI and machine learning, all featuring various multidisciplinary collaborations.

ACMS offers a Bachelor of Science, a doctoral degree, a research master’s degree, and a professional master’s degree. Position duties include research, teaching, and service. The teaching load in ACMS is competitive, and the position is expected to begin in August 2027.

Qualifications:

Candidates at the entry level must have completed all requirements for a doctorate degree or have completed all but dissertation in applied mathematics, data science, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field. Candidates at the advanced level must have a Ph.D. or relevant terminal degree in applied mathematics, data science, mathematics, statistics, or a closely related field. Ideal candidates will have a proven track record of successful multidisciplinary collaboration.

We will begin reviewing completed applications on October 15, 2026, and continue accepting applications through November 20, 2026.

This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate.
