Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking educators and professionals for Studio and/or Elective Instruction at the undergraduate or first‑professional graduate degree levels. Applications will be reviewed as needed and placed in a pool for consideration for part‑time (regular or temporary) teaching positions as they are needed throughout the year.

Job Description

The Instructor is an adjunct faculty position not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. This is a term appointment for the Fall 2026 semester. Renewal will be based upon unit needs, funding, and performance that meets expectations, not to exceed two continuous semesters. The position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement between The University of Kansas and United Academics, United Academics of KU, AAUP, or AFT. UAKU is the exclusive representative. As the State of Kansas is a right‑to‑work state, you may choose to be a member or not a member of a union without fear of personal or professional repercussions.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start date and must pass a satisfactory background check. Due to state employment laws, the University of Kansas may be unable to hire fully remote workers for this position outside of Kansas. Specifically, employment is not offered to candidates residing in California, Idaho, Minnesota, or Delaware.

Instructional duties are 100% instructional:

  • Teaching in a specific field, developing course materials, managing syllabi, creating lectures and assignments, grading student work, advising students, and holding office hours.
  • 70% Studio and/or elective instruction — teaching at the undergraduate or first‑professional graduate levels in accordance with the KU Course Catalog.
  • 20% Class preparation.
  • 10% Maintaining office hours and attending administrative meetings.

All instructors are expected to collaborate with colleagues, stay current in their discipline, and comply with departmental, school/college, and university policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications
  • For teaching at the undergraduate level: M.Arch. (NAAB‑accredited professional terminal degree) OR B.Arch. (NAAB‑accredited professional terminal degree) or a professional or terminal degree from a related discipline (e.g., Engineering, Planning) plus a minimum of 5 years of effective professional experience.
  • For teaching at the graduate level: M.Arch. in an appropriate discipline (NAAB or equivalent accredited terminal degree) AND a record of research, scholarship, or achievement in the field OR Master’s in any discipline AND a minimum of seven years of applied relevant experience.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set needed to perform the duties. The degree level is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards, and benchmarks of peer institutions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Post‑professional degree or professional architectural registration.
  • College‑level teaching experience with documented evidence of outstanding achievement, such as publication, awards, design portfolio, certification within the design or construction industries, or licensure.
