Job summary

Foster-Glocester Regional Schools is seeking an Instructional Teaching Assistant for Ponaganset High in Glocester, RI. You will support students and staff in a technology-rich, high-performing middle school environment, operating under the supervision of teachers and the building administrator.

Responsibilities include data tracking, instructional support, behavior management, and assistance with curriculum implementation to meet educational goals.

Qualifications

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate Degree preferred; Certification as Teacher Assistant through RI DOE; Knowledge of instructional/behavioral strategies and use of adaptive software and assessment materials; Willingness to drive school vehicle if needed; Demonstrated ability to learn new strategies and technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Use instructional strategies and language under supervision to support individual students.

  • Identify barriers to learning and implement supportive strategies.

Foster-Glocester Regional School District is currently accepting applications for a highly effective instructional teaching assistant who wants to support students and staff in our technology rich high-performing middle school. Position: Special Education Instructional Teacher Assistant

Report to: Building Principal and Classroom Teacher

Function: To work as part of an instructional team along with teachers and related services personnel and assist in the design, implementation and evaluation of program activities to ensure high levels of learning and performance for identified students consistent with the mission of the district and goals of the school.

SALARY: As Per Non-Certified Contract

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Use a variety of appropriate instructional strategies, techniques and language developed, directed, and supervised by teachers and other professional staff to support individual student’s needs as deemed appropriate by the instructional team.
  • Gather, maintain and monitor data about progress, achievement, and behavior of individual students.
  • Identify behaviors and cognitive processing that interfere with learning and implement strategies to prevent and/or support positive social and academic behaviors.
  • Assist the teacher in creating a climate of acceptance in facilitating social/emotional needs of a diverse learning population (promoting friendships, reducing bullying, etc.).
  • Assist the teacher in providing instruction in academic, vocational, and interpersonal skills in school and community settings.
  • Supports student community-based instruction by providing educational services and driving students to community-based settings in an approved school-owned vehicle
  • Assist the teacher in planning, modification, and implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment within the classroom and the expanded school environment with diverse academic needs related to meeting grade level standards.
  • Assist the teacher in providing instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics readiness.
  • Use basic and student specific educational technology and assist students with the use of technology.
  • Reinforce and foster identified opportunities to generalize skills within the classroom and expanded school environment.
  • Produce classroom/school materials (classwork, lunch menu, etc.) in collaboration with the special education teacher and the classroom teacher(s).
  • Participate as a collaborative team member including the attendance at meetings beyond the school day if needed.
  • Provide, if needed, instructional and/or physical assistance in personal care routines (including toileting, hygiene and dressing).
  • Maintain confidentiality of students and supports the teacher as the primary, but not only, contact for communication with families and others directly involved in that student’s education.
  • Exhibit attributes of reliable attendance, promptness, dependability, and professional ethics.
  • Use a cooperative approach by working as an effective team member (sharing strategies, techniques and materials)
  • Use effective communication skills with students, colleagues, families and related agencies (spoken, written and non-verbal):
  • Participate in ongoing professional development specific to student/classroom needs.
  • Perform the functions of the position in accordance with the RI Professional Code of Conduct
  • Perform the functions of the position in accordance with all laws, regulations, school district policies, mission of the district, school-based plans, and administrative priorities
  • Other duties and responsibilities assigned by the classroom teacher, school and district administrators.

  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate Degree preferred; Appropriate certification as a Teacher Assistant through RIDE; Evidence of knowledge and skills necessary to perform the functions of the position; Evidence of knowledge and/or implementation of instructional/behavioral strategies, materials and/or technologies; Evidence of on-going professional development and training that may include the use of adaptive instructional and assessment materials; Demonstrated ability to effectively learn new strategies, techniques, and technologies; Ability to occasionally lift or restrain students; Effective written and oral communication skills; Be of good character; Willingness to drive school vehicle if in possession of a valid RI License; and Training in the use of adaptive software, instructional and assessment materials; and/or any combination of education, experience, and knowledge and skills deemed substantially equivalent by the school committee or designee to those listed above.
  • TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Work hours, days and year, compensation and benefits as per contract and school committee policy.
  • Candidates not previously employed by Foster schools must have a current BCI check completed with no disqualifying remarks to be appointed to any position.
