Job summary

UNC Pembroke is seeking an Instructional Services Reference Librarian to lead instructional technology and pedagogy for LIB1000 courses and library instruction sessions. The role coordinates instruction requests, schedules, and weekend reference coverage while supporting assessment reporting and program growth.

The successful candidate will supervise library technicians, develop online learning materials, and implement innovative digital tools and OER initiatives.

Qualifications

  • ALA Accredited Master’s Degree is required.
  • Experience teaching LIB1000 or library instruction sessions.
  • Strong collaboration and outreach abilities in an academic library setting.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise library technicians within the instruction department.
  • Develop and maintain online learning materials for the library using LMS, LibGuides, and digital tools.
  • Design collaborative instructional materials and modules for library instruction and courses.
  • Teach LIB1000 undergraduate classes and library instruction sessions using ACRL framework.
  • Assess instruction services and report data analyses.
  • Promote the library instruction department with campus communications and content creation.
  • Represent the department in campus collaborations, orientations, and student programming.
  • Maintain active research within the profession and continuous learning.
  • Provide flexible late-night and weekend coverage for outreach and campus initiatives.
  • Occasional weekend reference services in person and online.

Primary Purpose of Organization Unit

Mary Livermore Library supports learning and teaching, research, creation of knowledge, intellectual growth, and enrichment of the academic experience. The university works to “change lives through education,” while the library “enhances education through research.”

Primary Purpose of Position

This position will be the primary librarian of instructional technology and pedagogy of LIB1000 classes and library instruction (one shot) sessions. They will serve as the contact for instruction requests and scheduling. They will assist with weekend reference coverage and participate in assessment reporting. They will be a coordinator for the department for library outreach, collaborations, and library programming.

Job Description

1. Supervise library technician(s) within in the instruction department.

2. Develop and maintain online learning materials for the library with an understanding of learning management systems, Open Education Resources initiatives, LibGuides, AI, digital repositories, and innovative digital tools.

3. Design collaborative material for librarians with instruction duties, including Instructional Resource modules, tutorials, and interactive content for library instruction and course offerings.

4. Teach undergraduate LIB1000 (3 Credit) semester classes and library instruction sessions using the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.

5. Assess instruction services, and activities within the scope of online learning by writing reports, and data analysis.

6. Promote the library instruction department with active campus communication, online content creation, marketing materials, resource tutorials, and student programing.

7. Represent the library department as a campus leader collaborating in methods of retention through orientations, admissions events, student programming of first year, transfers, and graduate students.

8. Maintain active research and learning within the profession.

9. Provide flexible late night and weekend coverage for outreach and campus initiatives.

10. Work will include occasional weekend reference services face-to-face and online.

This position is designated as Mandatory Personnel: Employees whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.

Management Preference

Supervision of library technicians and student workers preferred. Academic Library experience preferred.
