Job summary

WESTWOOD MIDDLE in Danville, VA seeks an Instructional Paraprofessional to assist daily supervision and instruction of students under the direction of the principal and supervising teacher. You will support classroom activities, monitor progress, and help implement academic standards.

The role requires effective communication with students and staff, collaboration with teachers, and adherence to behavioral expectations in various school settings. Immediate start available.

Qualifications

• Completion of at least two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education.
• Attainment of an Associate degree, at a minimum.
• Demonstration of knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment

Responsibilities

• Follow the directions of the teacher and/or principal.
• Supervise students in instructional situations in the manner prescribed by the teacher and/or principal.
• Consult with the teacher concerning academic expectations for individual students.
• Become aware of the academic standards used in monitoring progress and implement those standards.
• Use time efficiently in working with a group of students so that each child is helped as needed.
• Use good judgment in interpreting a lesson and/or supporting teacher instruction in a group situation.
• Assist the teacher and/or principal whenever possible in meeting the needs of each child.
• Supervise students in the classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, playground, and at rest time in a safe, structured, and positive manner that supports the expectations of the teacher and/or principal.
• Consult with the teacher and/or principal concerning behavioral expectations for the children in different situations.
• Observe the quality and style of teacher-prepared materials so that the same standards will be maintained in materials prepared by the instructional paraprofessional.
• Correctly operate the office machines that are necessary for preparation of materials.
• Prepare materials in the most time-efficient manner.
• Use time wisely so that materials are ready when needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

All paraprofessionals hired to perform instructional duties must meet one of the following criteria:

• Completion of at least two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (four-year college or university); or
• Attainment of an Associate degree, at a minimum; or
• Demonstration of knowledge and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local academic assessment
