Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assists faculty in analyzing curriculum, course objectives, learning outcomes, and instructional needs to provide guidance for faculty developing web, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses.
  • Provides training and support on the current learning management system (D2L) for delivering online, hybrid, and web-enhanced instruction.
  • Maintains current knowledge of accessibility standards and guidelines related to distance education and ADA compliance.
  • Guides faculty on creating ADA-compliant web and hybrid course content using the course management system.
  • Co-administrator for the college's LMS and serves as the D2L technical liaison, facilitating communication between faculty and technical teams.
  • Provides day-to-day support for faculty and courses using the course management system.
  • Co-administrator for Panopto, Respondus, Yuja Panorama, Simple Syllabus, and other instructional technologies.
  • Drives development and oversight of programs that support enrollment, retention, and graduation growth.

Job description

The Instructional Designer

Assists with the development of online courses for teaching and training, supports faculty development in evaluating, adapting, and redesigning courses that incorporate technology into the curriculum, provides administrative support for instructional technology, and designs and implements professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.

Essential Functions
  • Assists faculty in analyzing curriculum, course objectives, learning outcomes, and instructional needs to provide guidance for faculty developing web, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses.
  • Provides training and support on the current learning management system (D2L) for delivering online, hybrid, and web-enhanced instruction.
  • Maintains current knowledge of Federal, State, and Accreditation regulations, FERPA, copyright law/fair use, and guidelines relating to Distance Education.
  • Guides faculty on creating ADA-compliant web and hybrid course content using the course management system.
  • Provides remediation and remediation assistance for faculty for online course materials to help the institution reach the DOJ-mandated WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines
  • Researches, evaluates, and guides implementation of best practices for general education and discipline-specific pedagogies.
  • Assists faculty with defining appropriate instructional technology methods in preparation for learning-centered course design.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to systematically develop technology-driven instructional materials and learning resources with an emphasis on Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
  • Serves as co-administrator for the course management system and serves as the D2L technical liaison, facilitating communication and support between faculty and technical support teams.
  • Provides day-to-day support for faculty and courses using the course management system.
  • Serves as co-administrator for the course streaming web content server (Panopto), remote proctoring service (Respondus), integrated accessibility checker (Yuja Panorama), Simple Syllabus, and other instructional technologies.
  • Co-administrator for the college's instance of LinkedIn Learning.
  • Conducts training sessions for faculty and staff to enhance technology skills and seamlessly integrate technology into instruction and productivity.
  • Supports development and oversight of programs and services that result in enrollment, progression, retention, and graduation growth for the service area.
Supplemental Functions
  • Provides input into planning for future instructional technology directions
  • Serves on college committees as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned
Required
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum Development, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in instructional design or teaching
  • Experience with learning management systems and educational technology tools
  • Understanding of accessibility standards and online learning best practices
Preferred
  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Curriculum Development, or related field
  • Computer Technology Specialist, Comp TIA A+ Certification, or comparable experience
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Ability to learn and stay abreast of current/upcoming classroom technologies
  • Knowledge of technology and software including Microsoft Office Suite, Desire2Learn course management system
  • Knowledge of emerging AI technologies, specifically in their application to Higher Education
  • Knowledge of multimedia software and instructional technologies
  • Decision-making and conflict-resolution abilities
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Must be able to work with diverse faculty, students, and community members
  • Must be able to function effectively as a team member
Working Conditions
  • Regularly scheduled work hours of 7:45 am-4:15 pm
  • In-person position at the Columbia Campus of Columbia State Community College
  • Normal sitting and movement in an office environment
  • Visual and hand usage of computer terminal and/or PC
