Job summary

Northampton Community College seeks an Instructional Designer to lead the application of instructional design theories and ensure courses across modalities meet accessibility and copyright standards. You will work with faculty and the Dean for Instructional Excellence to design, review, and improve courses, provide professional development, and explore emerging technologies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, educational technology, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Master's degree in instructional design is preferred.
  • Experience as an instructional designer in an educational setting is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and copyright policies.

Responsibilities

  • Support faculty in the development of new courses.
  • Support faculty in reviewing and revising existing courses.
  • Participate in quality assurance checks prior to the start of each semester and share feedback with faculty.
  • Work closely with the Dean for Instructional Excellence to design and offer professional development opportunities.
  • Research and suggest emerging technologies to support instruction.
  • Maintain a regular and on-campus presence including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Primary Function

To provide leadership in the application of instructional design theories and methodologies designed to help faculty build and facilitate quality courses in all modalities. Works closely with faculty to ensure their courses and instructional content and assessments reflect best practices in course design, accessibility standards, and copyright policies.

Responsibilities
  • Support faculty in the development of new courses.
  • Support faculty in reviewing and revising existing courses.
  • Participate in quality assurance course checks prior to the start of each semester and share feedback with faculty.
  • Work closely with the Dean for Instructional Excellence to design and offer professional development opportunities to help faculty be effective instructors.
  • Research and suggest emerging technologies to support instruction.
  • Support pilot studies which impact learning initiatives.
  • Help faculty determine if their instructional content and assessments align with course learning objectives and guidelines for accessibility and applicable copyright laws.
  • Participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Maintain a regular and physical presence on campus including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Perform other responsibilities, as assigned by immediate supervisor.
Organizational Relationships
  • Responsible to the Dean for Instructional Excellence for performance of assigned responsibilities.
  • Work collaboratively with Academic Affairs and Information Technology Services (ITS).
  • Work closely with faculty and staff.
  • Relate to College and department goals.
  • Function as an active member of the College's administrative team.
Performance Standards
  • Performance in this position is considered satisfactory when: mutually agreed upon objectives have been attained within a specified time frame.
  • Responsibilities of the position have been carried out at a level consistent with performance objectives.
  • Effective cooperative relationships exist between Academic Affairs and ITS, as well as with staff, faculty, and other members of the College community.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in instructional design, educational technology, or related field from an institution of higher education recognized by an institutional accreditor approved by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) required. Master's degree in instructional design is preferred.
  • Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: broad understanding of learning theory and instructional design models; demonstrated ability to evaluate courses using instructional design standards; competencies in technologies (e.g., learning management systems, AI, etc.) used to build and facilitate courses; competent in accessibility standards and copyright law as it pertains to content used in courses; organizational, communicative, and leadership skills.
  • Experience: Professional work experience as an instructional designer in an educational setting is strongly preferred. Prior teaching experience within a higher education setting is desirable.
