Job description

JOB TITLE: Instructional Associate – SPED

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

REPORTS TO: Principal and Teacher(s) assigned

DEPT. /CAMPUS: Assigned Campus

DATE REVISED: April 2020

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist the special education teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Support the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the general supervision of the principal and the immediate direction of a certified teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Valid Texas educational aide certificate

Associate’s degree, completion of 48 college credit hours, or meeting the formal academic assessment requirements of No Child Left Behind Act.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work well with children with disabilities

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Effective communication skills

Knowledge of general office equipment

Experience:

Experience working with children

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and policies of the district and local board.
  2. Assist students with physical disabilities according to their individualized needs, including transferring, lifting, or positioning.
  3. Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and hygiene.
  4. Manage student behavior and intervene in crises, including restraining disruptive or dangerous behaviors as needed.
  5. Learn and adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  6. Work with individual students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
  7. Supervise students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, and playground.
  8. Keep the teacher informed of any student needs or problems.
  9. Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  10. Help maintain a neat and organized classroom environment.
  11. Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  12. Maintain administrative records and assist in preparing reports.
  13. Provide orientation and support to substitute teachers.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  15. Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and school events as needed.
  16. Follow district and campus policies and routines.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned by supervising teachers or the principal.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Wheelchair lifts, ramps, personal computers, copiers, typewriters, audiovisual equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands: Reading, effective verbal and written communication, emotional resilience under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting, biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases. May involve working from home and using personal electronic devices.
