JOB TITLE: Instructional Associate – SPED

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt

REPORTS TO: Principal and Teacher(s) assigned

DEPT. /CAMPUS: Assigned Campus

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Assist the special education teacher in providing for the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in a special education setting. Support the implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction. Work under the supervision of the principal and the direct guidance of a certified teacher.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas educational aide certificate
  • Associate’s degree, completion of 48 college credit hours, or meet the academic assessment requirements of No Child Left Behind Act
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Ability to work well with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
Experience:
  • Experience working with children
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and policies.
  2. Assist students with physical disabilities according to their individualized needs, including transferring, lifting, or positioning.
  3. Help students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and hygiene.
  4. Assist in managing student behavior and crisis intervention, including restraint when necessary.
  5. Learn and adapt to each student’s medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  6. Work with students or small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises.
  7. Supervise students throughout the school day inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, and playground.
  8. Keep the teacher informed of any student needs or issues.
  9. Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.
  10. Help maintain a neat and organized classroom environment.
  11. Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.
  12. Support the teacher in maintaining records and preparing reports.
  13. Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  15. Participate in staff development, faculty meetings, and events as required.
  16. Follow district and campus policies and routines.
  17. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
EQUIPMENT USED:

Wheelchair lift, ramps, personal computer, copier, typewriter, audiovisual equipment.

Mental Demands:

Reading, effective communication, emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, pulling, heavy lifting, exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases. Employees may be required to work from home using personal devices.
