Job summary

Chesterfield County Public Schools is seeking an instructional assistant to support students with IEPs in general and special education locations under the direction of a special education teacher.

The position involves assisting with classroom duties, recording grades, preparing instructional materials, administering accommodations, supervising bus transport, lunch and recess, and documenting student progress according to IEPs.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification is required.
  • Ability to supervise students and follow oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to work professionally with students and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers with classroom duties, including recording grades, preparing instructional materials, and administering accommodations.
  • Assist students during instructional activities (one-on-one, small groups, whole group) as directed by the teacher.
  • Document student progress as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist students onto/off the school bus and supervise lunch/recess as indicated in the IEP.
  • Serve as an aide on the school bus, as indicated in the IEP.
  • Work with students under the direction of teachers and related services providers to implement the IEP.
  • Participate in training and implement support for students related to toileting, personal care, and basic healthcare needs as indicated in the IEP.
  • May serve in the absence of the clinic assistant if trained in procedures.
  • Implements accommodations in a child’s IEP as directed by the teacher.
  • Provides clerical assistance – typing, filing, maintaining records and ordering supplies and classroom materials.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

General Description

Provides classroom and environmental supports, under the direction of a special education teacher, to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP) served in general and special education locations . Performs routine clerical and instructional assignments within established procedures and standard practices. Contacts are made within and outside the department; Requires professional ethics in the handling of confidential student and family information. Each Instructional Assistant will have a specific set of work assignments, as directed by the special education teacher, specific to meeting the needs of students as indicated in the child’s IEP .

  • Assists special education teachers with classroom duties, including, but not limited to recording grades, preparing instructional materials, and administering instructional and testing accommodations.

  • Assists the special education teacher by supporting students during instructional activities (e.g., one-on-one, in small groups, during whole group instruction) as directed by the special education teacher.

  • Documents student progress as directed by the special education teacher.

  • Assists students onto and off the school bus and supervises students at lunch, recess as indicated in the child’s IEP.

  • Serves as an aide on the school bus, both to and from school, as indicated in the child’s IEP.

  • Works with students under the direction of the special education teacher(s) and related services providers, as appropriate, to implement the child’s IEP.

  • Participates in training(s) and implementing support for students related to toileting, personal care, and basic healthcare related needs (e.g., using a Hoyer lift, tube feeding, seizure intervention) as indicated in the child’s IEP.

  • May serve in the absence of the clinic assistant if trained in procedures.

  • Implements accommodations in a child’s IEP as directed by the special education teacher.

  • Provides clerical assistance – typing, filing, maintaining records and ordering supplies and classroom materials.

  • Performs other related duties as required.



Qualifications


  • Some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and clerical procedures; of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise children in the absence of the special education teacher; to perform basic clerical tasks, communicate effectively orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally with students, staff.



Additional Job Requirements


  1. High School diploma, training, or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  2. Position requires current First Aid/CPR /AED certification.

  3. Individuals must attend provided training and renew as mandated.

  4. Assignment placement may require additional training requirements such as and/or specific training on aspects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

  5. Applicants considered for employment must successfully complete the following background investigations/tests: Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Investigation State Police Criminal History Investigation Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation Tuberculosis Screening/Test



Compensation $22,246.99 - $40,567.72 Hours Per Day 6.5 Days Per Year 183
