Job summary

LaPorte Community School Corporation is seeking an Instructional Assistant to support students with academics and social activities under the direction of the Classroom Teacher.

The role requires assisting with instructional activities, promoting positive student behavior, and maintaining confidentiality while performing classroom and clerical duties. Regular participation in in-service trainings and adherence to school policies are expected.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Two years of college is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret textbooks and teacher guides; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of children, parents or employees.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students with instructional activities and assignments as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist the teacher in the development of positive student behaviors.
  • Maintain student confidentiality by complying with all aspects of the Rights to Students Confidentiality Act.
  • Assist with classroom clerical and other non-student specific activities as directed by the teacher.
  • Participate in mandatory in-service training meetings designed to improve the skills of the instructional assistant for the benefit of the students.
  • Comply with all the standard rules and regulations for the assigned building established by the building principal.
  • Defer all specific questions about a student to the teacher for a response.

Instructional Assistant

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Classroom Teacher

SUMMARY

To assist students with academics and social activities, manage behavior, and assist theclassroom teacher as directed. These duties include, but are not limited to, those listed below.

Desirable Qualifications

Previous experience working with students; positive employment history; and, recommendations from an individual(s) in an administrative position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Education and/or Experience that is Required

High School Diploma or GED

Two years of college is preferred

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret textbooks and / or teacher guides, student IEPs, Behavior Plans, proceduremanuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groupsof children, parents or employees of the school organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts appropriate to the students' grade level. Ability to apply1.

concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where onlylimited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral,diagram, or schedule form.

The employee should be able to use the following machines, tools, equipment, and work aids which maybe representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work: pen,pencil, pointer, slate, stylus, projector, public address system, tape recorder, blackboard, chalk, charts,diagrams, examinations, manuals, maps publications, reference books, textbooks, augmentative devices,computers, various computer programs, copy machine.
