Job description

Position: Instructional Assistant - EL (WHS) 37.5 hrs/wk

Salary: Grade 4, Step 1, $25.83. Salary schedule listed in the ESPA agreement linked here.

Assignment: 10 Month, Temporary & Grant Funded, effective August 11, 2025. Contract may be renewed annually pending grant funding.

General Responsibilities

This role involves close interaction with staff, students, and parents/guardians, focusing on implementing specialized educational programs. The Instructional Assistant - EL works under the direction of EL certified staff, reacting appropriately in crisis situations and demonstrating initiative and creativity.

The employee must follow established systems and procedures, exhibit organizational skills, exercise independent judgment, and maintain confidentiality. Collaboration and initiative are essential to support the district's mission.

Qualifications
  • Must have or obtain State and NCLB Approved Paraprofessional designation per Illinois State Board of Education requirements.
  • Physical ability to lift/move supplies, materials, and office equipment up to 40 lbs.
  • Ability to sit at a workstation for extended periods and move frequently within the building.
  • Organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Proficiency in computer use, office practices, procedures, and equipment.
  • Positive representation of the district and a positive attitude.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, parents, and visitors.
  • Awareness of diverse student needs, including physical and social-emotional aspects.
  • Strong English language skills in composition, literature, reading, or related fields.
Position Expectations
  1. Assist students in the classroom under certified staff guidance, including:
    • Providing individualized or group instruction
    • Monitoring student work
    • Explaining instructions
    • Supporting understanding of cultural differences
  2. Support certified staff with tasks such as:
    • Translating classroom materials
    • Monitoring and administering assessments
    • Implementing school technology
    • Reviewing student information systems
    • Supervising students in non-academic settings
  3. Serve as a liaison for the EL team by:
    • Interpreting for non-English speaking parents
    • Facilitating understanding of cultural differences
    • Translating printed materials
  4. Participate in professional development to improve job performance.
  5. Develop inclusive, equitable relationships with staff, students, and community members.
