Primary Purpose
The Institutional Research Analyst position is part of the Strategic Analytics & Institutional Research team in Institutional Research, Assessment & Planning (IRAP) at Appalachian State University. The Institutional Research Analyst is responsible for managing, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting data for internal and external stakeholders. The Institutional Research Analyst should have a broad understanding of higher education and the collection, interpretation, and analysis of institutional data.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree and at least one year of relevant experience OR Bachelor's degree with at least three years of relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated proficiency in retrieving data from ERP Systems (i.e., Banner or PeopleSoft) using programming languages or other data tools (such as SQL, Tableau, SAS).
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders
- Ability to operate with a high level of independence, routinely exercising sound judgment and proactively managing responsibilities and priorities
- Ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Experience with querying, transforming, and analyzing data to produce usable information
- Ability to understand and work with complex, cross-functional data, to ensure accuracy, quality, and integrity
- Ability to collaborate with others and to work in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one to two years of professional experience working with data to produce reports, dashboards, or perform data analysis
- At least one to two years of professional experience with analytics-related languages (such as SQL, SAS)
- Experience with data visualization tools (such as Tableau, Power BI, SAS Viya)
- Experience in higher education in a professional role utilizing or handling university data
- Project management experience
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Data reporting responsibilities include student, course and financial aid snapshots for the UNC System Office Student DataMart, IPEDS, the Common Data Set, and a variety of external surveys and rankings. This position will work collaboratively with many key contacts across the university, at the UNC System Office and externally to ensure data and reporting needs are met. This position also works closely with other analysts in IRAP for various data & reporting projects.
- Develop working knowledge of reporting requirements, institutional data, data definitions, processes, and key stakeholders to effectively support data and reporting needs and deliver accurate, consistent, and reliable data analysis.
- Serve as the primary data coordinator for the UNC System Office Student DataMart, external reporting, and rankings, coordinating the preparation, validation, review, and timely submission of data while ensuring accuracy and consistency.
- Support the reporting and analysis needs of IRAP and campus stakeholders, which includes routine and ad-hoc data requests and preparation of related summaries and reports.
- Conduct data analysis and produce reports for internal and external stakeholders that accurately aggregate, summarize, and convey student, curriculum, employee, and other institutional data.
- Respond to federal and state reporting, rankings, and other study needs throughout the year.
- Collaborate with key contacts across the university, at the UNC System Office, and externally to ensure data and reporting needs are met.
- Work closely with other analysts in IRAP on various data & reporting projects.
- Create documentation for all programs, processes, datasets, reports, and other related functions.
- Conduct routine and ad-hoc data validation and data quality reviews of reports and institutional data.
- Represent IRAP at various internal and external user groups and monthly meetings.
