Reporting to the Director of Institutional Giving, the role manages a portfolio of current and prospective funders and leads grant development and management—including prospecting, proposal development, budgeting in collaboration with Finance, compliance with funder requirements, deliverables tracking, and mid‑term/final reporting. The position also strengthens relationships through thoughtful cultivation, acknowledgements, and site visits, and serves as an internal project manager and cross‑functional liaison to ensure timely, high‑quality submissions and fulfillment of programmatic and financial obligations. The Institutional Giving Manager supervises the Grant Writer and contributes to a collaborative, high‑performing Development team.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain a strong pipeline of prospective institutional funders, including conducting research, tracking prospects, and partnering with leadership to prioritize and advance new funding opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Finance Department to prepare/edit budgets for submissions and reports.
  • Maintain regular contact with existing and prospective donors for cultivation and stewardship purposes. Plan, organize, and steward site visits.
  • Oversee internal systems related to grants (e.g., maintain a calendar of deadlines, supervise proposal development and reporting timelines, manage funder deliverables and the expenditure tracking process). Provide guidance for colleagues to implement and maintain these systems.
  • Maintain regular contact with internal teams (Development, Programs, Finance, Research & Evaluation) to ensure high-quality project deliverables.
  • Assist with the collection, input, and maintenance of donor information into Raiser’s Edge database, including working with the database administrator to ensure records are current and accurate.
  • Advise the Director of Institutional Giving on revenue projections based on known and potential opportunities.
  • Supervise the Grant Writer, including assigning and prioritizing workload, providing clear direction and ongoing coaching, reviewing and editing grant materials for quality and alignment, and holding staff accountable for timely, high‑quality completion of proposals and reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate ideas clearly and persuasively to diverse audiences.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, track complex deliverables, and maintain close attention to detail related to funder requirements and deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze issues, identify priorities, and make sound, timely decisions in a fast‑paced, results‑oriented environment.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, with the ability to respond to changing priorities, funding landscapes, and organizational needs.

About Us

After School Matters is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization that annually offers after‑school and summer programs to nearly 19,000 Chicago high school teens to explore and develop their talents while gaining critical skills that will set them up for success in college and beyond.

Thirty‑five years later, now known as After School Matters, our program has engaged more than 450,000 Chicago teens and is the nation’s largest and most successful provider of after‑school and summer programs for high school teens. No other organization offers programs to high school students at the scale and quality that we do.

We offer paid apprenticeships led by professionals in the fields of arts, communications and leadership, sports, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). Our nationally respected youth development model has been replicated in cities across the country and earned us the City Livability Award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Programs take place at community locations throughout the city, including four ASM buildings: downtown at Gallery 37 Center for the Arts and Orleans, the Michael and Karyn Lutz Center in Belmont Cragin, and the Pullman community at Gately Park. Currently, After School Matters' annual operating budget is approximately $48M and employs approximately 500 staff across the organization. For more information, visit www.afterschoolmatters.org.
