SDOT’s Bridge Maintenance Team has a wonderful opportunity for a Bridge Installation Maintenance Worker. Under general supervision, the Installation Maintenance Worker serves as a general worker with a background in trades who will perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance, supporting journey‑level staff in their work on more complex responsibilities. The work involves varied processes, use of power tools, construction techniques, outdoor environments, and coordination with skilled trades. Employees read basic plans, transport materials, build forms, assist in concrete placement, and perform general maintenance tasks. The role requires specialized knowledge of field safety practices, basic tools, and semi‑skilled construction techniques.

Job Responsibilities

• Assists Bridge Carpenter Maintenance Leads in repairing, installing, and maintaining bridge components, wooden structures, guardrails, handrails, access platforms, and related hardware.
• Performs basic carpentry tasks including cutting, fastening, assembling materials, and replacing minor hardware under the direction of journey level carpenters.
• Assists Senior Cement Finishers by breaking and removing concrete, constructing and stripping forms, placing material, preparing surfaces, and performing concrete finishing support tasks.
• Builds simple formwork for sidewalks, retaining walls, bridge approaches, pads, and minor structural elements.
• Installs and maintains field fixtures such as bollards, pathway signs, benches, and miscellaneous components associated with bridge and structural maintenance areas.
• Performs minor general repairs involving hardware replacement, basic tool use, and small fixtures.
• Reads and interprets simple plans, blueprints, and sketches related to carpentry or concrete support tasks.
• Coordinates small tasks with tradespersons, inspectors, engineers, and supervisors to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to safety practices.
• Prepares and maintains records including equipment logs, material pickups, weekly reports, and field documentation.
• Cleans, services, and performs minor repairs on hand tools and equipment used in carpentry and concrete work.
• Orders, picks up, and transports supplies, parts, and jobsite materials.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of general construction or maintenance experience, including installation, repair, or support work related to carpentry, concrete, or structural maintenance. Combinations of education, training, and experience will be evaluated for comparability.

Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or are able to describe comparable experience:

• Basic knowledge of carpentry and concrete support techniques.
• Ability to safely use hand and power tools including saws, drills, jackhammers, and grinders.
• Ability to read and interpret simple blueprints or diagrams.
• Ability to communicate effectively with trades personnel, supervisors, inspectors, and contractors.
• Skill in maintaining tools and equipment in safe working condition.
• Ability to work effectively outdoors under varying weather conditions.
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor for extended periods.

Other Requirements

• Standing, walking, climbing, bending, and lifting for extended periods.
• Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Works outdoors in all weather conditions, including active field environments near traffic and bridge structures.
• Exposure to noise, dust, heavy equipment, and hazardous conditions requiring PPE.
• Ability to work safely around concrete tools, carpentry equipment, and heavy machinery.

Licenses, Certifications

• Current Washington State Driver’s License.
• Ability to operate a forklift; additional equipment certifications may be required depending on assignment.

Additional Information

The full salary range for this position is $37.39 - $38.84 per hour.
