Job summary

Xavier Catholic Schools in Cedar Rapids, IA, is seeking a Middle School Assistant Coach for 7th grade girls basketball. You will support the program under the Director of Athletics/Activities, coaching practices and games, and helping to develop student-athletes across grades 7–12.

The role is an exempt (stipend) position with responsibilities to organize practices, mentor players, ensure sportsmanship, and collaborate with feeder programs and the Activities Department.

Qualifications

• Valid coaching license through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners or the ability to obtain it prior to the start of the season.
• Previous coaching experience preferred.
• Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, instruct, and supervise students athletes and a coaching staff.
• Ability to work under pressure and remain calm.
• Proficient in organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Attend and effectively coach in all scheduled games.
• Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught to the student athlete, promoting individual and team growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect and good sportsmanship.
• Lead, organize and be present at any and/or all practices.
• Train and inform staff on the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques via staff meetings, clinics, and training.
• Delegate and assign specific duties, supervise implementation and at season’s end analyze staff effectiveness.
• Ensure all coaches work together toward a common goal within their respective programs and provide unity with the feeder schools and affiliated youth leagues within the XCS.
• Adhere to injury prevention procedures established by XCS.
• Apply and enforce all student discipline during athletic contests and ensure student athletics maintain sportsmanship in all phases of the competition.
• Collaboratively work to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and indirectly by working closely with administration, cheerleaders, pep clubs, boosters, etc.
• Take precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for participation.
• Work collaboratively with the Activities Department to schedule competitions and coordinate arrangements.
• Promote the athletic program for purposes of increasing interest and participation.
• Maintain inventory of uniforms and equipment within the program.
• Annually establish and meet performance goals.
• Be familiar with and adhere to the coaches handbook, employee handbook, Board of Educational Examiners Professional Code of Ethics and Conduct, and board policies, especially those governing student non-discrimination, anti-harassment, bullying, mandatory reporting, student record confidentiality, and other pertinent policies.
• Advise students and parents on the athletic code of conduct, including consequences for violation, and coordinate with the Activities Director in instances of possible violations of the code of conduct.
• Make recommendations to the athletic director and principal in the hiring and/or retention of assistant coaches. Direct, supervise, and evaluate regularly the performance of all assistant coaches.
