Inspector II - Traffic Operations
The City of Colorado Springs is ready to welcome an Inspector II for the Traffic Operations team! As an Inspector II, you will be responsible for overseeing and inspecting all work related to traffic control and operations within the City’s right of way. You will ensure compliance with City codes, traffic control standards, and safety regulations, while serving as the main point of contact for permits and traffic-related concerns. This position requires extensive interaction with the public, responding to citizen inquiries, and managing permit applications for activities affecting city roadways.

Job Type:Full-time; non-exempt
Hourly Salary:$31.11 - $37.35
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:00AM - 3:30PM with flexibility for occasional evening projects.


As an Inspector II for Traffic Operations, you will:
  • Review and approve all permits related to construction, events, and utility work impacting traffic flow and safety within the City’s right of way
  • Conduct site inspections of traffic control setups to ensure compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and local standards
  • Serve as the primary contact for citizen concerns regarding traffic control and safety, responding to inquiries, and resolving complaints promptly
  • Monitor construction and special event activities in the public right of way, including traffic control devices, road closures, and detours
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal traffic regulations in the planning and execution of traffic management
  • Coordinate with internal city departments, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure all traffic operations are carried out efficiently and safely
  • Maintain accurate records of permits, inspections, and project updates, ensuring proper documentation and compliance
  • Investigate and resolve issues related to traffic signals, road markings, and signage as part of regular and special inspections
  • Collaborate with city staff and external contractors to review and recommend improvements to traffic control systems and setups

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
Knowledge of:
  • MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) for traffic control, signs, and barriers
  • Traffic engineering principles, particularly in relation to traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and work zone safety
  • Traffic control plans, signage, markings, and methods for maintaining safe work zones and roadways
  • State and federal transportation and safety regulations
  • The permit application and review process for construction and special events in public roadways
  • Best practices in coordinating road closures, lane restrictions, and detours during construction and events
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite for reporting, documentation, and permit tracking

Ability to:
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with the public, city staff, contractors, and developers in fast-paced and dynamic environments
  • Interpret and apply City policies, traffic regulations, and permit requirements
  • Review and interpret traffic control plans, signage layouts, and technical drawings
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and resolve traffic-related complaints efficiently
  • Effectively manage multiple projects and inspections within set timelines
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with stakeholders at all levels
  • Work independently and make informed decisions while overseeing multiple work sites
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (high school diploma or GED
  • Three years of full-time, professional experience in a related field
  • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restrictions related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charge
  • Possess upon hire and maintain, Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) certification from the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) or the Colorado Contractors Association (CCA)
