Job summary

City of Shreveport seeks an Inspector, Buildings to ensure residential and commercial construction complies with the City’s Comprehensive Building Code through inspections and information sharing.

The role involves examining plans, conducting on-site inspections, directing corrective actions, and reporting results. A Louisiana driver’s license, five years in construction, and knowledge of IBC/IRC are required, with certification within one year.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license and maintain driving record.
• Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; evaluate construction phases and designs.
• Basic computer skills (email, basic programs).
• Must be able to meet multiple deadlines in a stressful environment.
• Must complete an acceptable job-related certification within one year of employment or as directed by Director of Public Works.

Responsibilities

• Assist architects and contractors by examining plans and making conforming recommendations.
• Examine permit applications and accompanying plans, plats, blueprints, and specs.
• Conduct on-site inspections of new installations, alterations, and repairs.
• Direct corrective actions to ensure conformity with Code or halt work as needed.
• Record inspection results on required forms.
• Investigate reports of unauthorized work and pause work until formal application is received.
• Approve applications at final inspection if compliant with Code.
• Maintain files and records; communicate and compile reports.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Inspector, Buildings works to ensure that residential and commercial, new and existing construction is built, and/or renovated in compliance with the City's Comprehensive Building Code through inspection and information sharing.

• 1. Assistsarchitects and contractors by examining building plans during preparatory phase and making suggestions and recommendations that will result in conforming to the provisions of the City's Comprehensive Building Code and Zoning Ordinance.
• 2. Examines applications for permits and accompanying plans, plats, blueprints and specifications.
• 3. Conducts on-site inspections of new installations, alterations and repairs.
• 4. Directs corrective actions to insure conformity with Code or halts work, as appropriate.
• 5. Records results of inspections on specified forms.
• 6. Investigates reports of unauthorized work and direct discontinuance pending receipt of formal application for such work by the City.
• 7. Upon final inspection, approves applications which conform within the Code.
• 8.Maintains applicable files and records.
• 9. Communicates and compiles reports using basic computer programs.
• 10. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

• 1.High School Graduate, GED, or the equivalent.
• 2. A minimum of five (5) years' experience in the Construction field or equivalent.
• 3. Thorough knowledge of the International Building and Residential Codes (knowledge may be acquired during Working Test Period)
• 4. Customer service skills and the ability to gather and evaluate facts and a demeanor that generates confidence, respect and trust.
• 5. Possess a valid Louisiana Driver's license and maintain a healthy driving record.
• 6.Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of construction phases, structural conditions, and architecture designs.
• 7. Basic computer skills such as reading and responding to email.
• 8. Ability to meet multiple deadlines in a stressful environment.
• 9. Successfully complete an acceptable job related certification within one (1) year of employment or within period as extended by Director of Public Works subject to the availability of training. Upon obtaining thecertifications, employees will move to level 14. Employees possessing certification at the time of hire will be placed on level 14. Current employees within this classification shall complete the acceptable certification withinone (1) year after the training is first offered subsequent to adoption of these class specification amendments.All time requirements of theses specification amendments may be extended by the Director of Public Works as individual circumstance may warrant.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS.

• 1. Tasks involve frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping; some unassisted lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
• 2. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. May require the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of colors.
• 3. Requires the ability to talk and/or hear. (talking: expressing or exchanging information by means of spoken words; hearing perceiving nature of sounds by ear)

Work Environment:

• 1. Tasks require infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
• 2. Working around and with machinery having moving parts, heavy dust and loose particles.

Working at heights and low areas. Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Travel:

Extensive travel and driving will be required locally from location to location to accomplish job assignments and visit job sites.
