Job summary

Gulfshoresal seeks a Building Official to lead the city's building inspection program on-site. The role requires directing inspection activities, setting standards, and ensuring compliance with codes and regulations.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, 5–7 years in building construction or inspection, and ICC Building Official certification, plus a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, public administration or related field.
• Five to seven years of experience in building construction or inspection, including management experience.
• ICC Building Official certification is required.
• Valid Driver's License is required.

Job description

Plans, directs, and supervises the City's building inspection activities.

Essential Functions:

• Develop and establish policies insuring the efficient operation of the City's building inspection activities;
• Select, train, and supervise personnel directly or through subordinate supervisors,establish performance standards, evaluate the performance of
• subordinate staff, establish work priorities, goals, objectives, and schedules;
• Develop and administer public relations effort to inform citizens or internal staff of services provided, promote effective citizens and staff relations;
• Recommend revisions of building electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes;
• Prepare and administer operating budget;
• Perform related duties as directed.

Qualifications:

Completion of a bachelor degree in engineering, architecture, public administration or a related field with an additional five to seven years of experience in building construction or inspection, including management experience; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:

International Code Council Certified Building Official

Valid Current Driver's License

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Pertinent local and state codes and ordinances;
• Enforcement procedures;
• Building construction methods and practices.

Ability to:

• Read and interpret codes and ordinances;
• Prepare reports;
• Read and interpret building construction plans and specifications;
• Supervise the work of others;
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with other City officials, builders, and the public;
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements:

• Occasionally stand and walk during the shift.
• Occasionally climb ladders, stairs, and other inclined surfaces.
• Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
• Occasionally bend and kneel.
• Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees.
• Occasionally rotate upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing.
