Job summary

Oaklawn Psychiatric Center in Elkhart County is seeking an Inpatient Psychiatrist to lead the acute inpatient unit for adults with complex behavioral health needs. You will perform psychiatric evaluations, oversee medication management, guide admission and discharge decisions, and coordinate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective transitions.

Qualifications

  • Valid Indiana Physician and CSR - Physician licenses required
  • Valid DEA certification required
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Psychiatry preferred
  • Experience in inpatient psychiatry, crisis stabilization, emergency psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, or treatment of individuals with serious mental illness preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and diagnostic formulation for adults on the acute inpatient unit.
  • Lead medication management, including initiation, adjustment, monitoring, and education related to psychiatric medications, side effects, safety concerns, and clinical response.
  • Make and document clinical decisions related to admission appropriateness, continued stay, level of care, observation status, stabilization goals, and discharge readiness.
  • Complete suicide risk, violence risk, capacity, substance use, and other clinical assessments relevant to inpatient psychiatric care.
  • Partner with the interdisciplinary treatment team to develop individualized treatment plans, review progress, address barriers to stabilization, and coordinate discharge planning.
  • Provide physician input during treatment team meetings, nursing consultations, crisis situations, family meetings, and care coordination discussions as clinically indicated.
  • Coordinate with outpatient providers, families, guardians, community partners, crisis services, and other levels of care to support continuity after hospitalization.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and clinically sound documentation consistent with regulatory, accreditation, payer, and organizational standards.
  • Participate in the inpatient psychiatrist call rotation and collaborate with the team to ensure safe, responsive physician coverage for the unit.
  • Contribute to quality improvement, patient safety, clinical practice development, and program initiatives within Oaklawn’s inpatient unit.

What We Offer

As an inpatient psychiatrist, you’ll serve as a key physician leader on Oaklawn’s acute inpatient psychiatric unit, working alongside experienced physicians, nurses, therapists, case managers, and program leaders. This role is focused on the psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, stabilization, medication management, treatment planning, risk assessment, and discharge readiness of adults requiring 24-hour inpatient psychiatric care. You will help guide admission and continued-stay decisions, support safe transitions to lower levels of care, and contribute to a collaborative culture centered on clinical excellence, patient safety, and recovery.
