Join to apply for the Inpatient Physician Assistant role at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

The Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for assisting the Program Attending physicians in the medical management of hematologic (including BMT) and solid tumor oncology patients, as well as patients receiving elective chemotherapy. Inpatient PAs will be expected to collaborate and cross-train with all inpatient teams. The PA works closely with physicians and nursing staff to develop and coordinate care plans that address the physical, psychological, and social needs of patients and their families. Collaboration between inpatient and ambulatory settings is expected.

Minimum Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree and successful completion of an AAPA/NCCPA accredited Physician Assistant Studies program.
  • NCCPA Certification and licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts.
  • Current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses.
  • 100 hours of CME every 2 years, per regulations.
  • PA I: No professional experience required.
  • PA II: 2 years of qualifying professional experience.
  • PA III: 5 years of qualifying professional experience.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Physician Assistant I
  • Manage patient care collaboratively with supervising MD and care team.
  • Examine patients and obtain physical condition information.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
  • Record medical data, including notes and test results.
  • Prescribe therapy or medications and perform procedures as privileges allow.
  • Collaborate effectively with care team members.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Maintain efficient practice without compromising care quality.
  • Coordinate care among attendings, nurses, social workers, and other professionals.
  • Document notes according to standard practices.
  • Participate in student precepting, subject to approval and training.
Physician Assistant II

Includes all PA I duties, plus:

  • Coordinate care among a broader healthcare team.
  • Respond to difficult situations professionally.
  • Serve as a role model for less experienced PAs.
  • Adapt to program needs flexibly.
Physician Assistant III

Includes all PA II duties, plus:

  • Act as clinical leader and role model.
  • Assist in program management goals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Expertise in general medicine; preferred experience in hematology/oncology and inpatient medicine.
  • Professional, quality-driven, with strong communication and judgment skills.
  • Mature, confident, and able to build collaborative relationships.
  • Committed to ongoing education and clinical excellence.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and understand hospital standards.
Additional Information
  • No supervisory responsibilities.
  • Provides direct care to adult patients.
  • Works in inpatient hospital and office settings, with potential exposure to infectious diseases.
