This job supports Mercy’s philosophy of patient centered care by performing a variety of technical and clerical duties for the hospital unit dose drug distribution system and intravenous admixture program under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for filling patient-specific medication orders and automated dispensing machines with unit dose medications, delivering medications to the nursing unit, prepackaging bulk medications into unit dose packages, retrieving data from the computer system, and preparing intravenous medications. Job DutiesResponsible for intra-departmental communication and promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives. (This includes working in different pharmacy department areas (e.g., HPCC, Inpatient, Employee Pharmacy, Hiawatha) as necessary to meet patient care and business needs Oversees accurate preparation of medications in accordance with standards for Tech-Check-Tech, if applicable. Maintains a working knowledge of and complies with pharmacy policy and standards of work and the laws, rules, and regulations that govern the distribution of medications; including those related to processing controlled substances. Completes and documents monthly unit inspections. Prepares all non-sterile, sterile, and hazardous medications according to recipes, policies and procedures, and in compliance with USP , , and . Maintains a sterile environment within all ISO 5 environments. Documents cleaning per policy. Properly disposes of all materials used in the preparation of compound sterile products. Carries out basic calculations required for the preparation of compounded medications. Fills emergency kits and carts with medications accurately and in a timely manner. Keeps pharmacy automation areas clean, neat, well-organized, and continuously flowing. Appropriately triages phone calls and takes detailed phone messages. Packages medications into unit dose from bulk supply and ensures that packages meet quality standards. Refills automated dispensing machines to prescribed par levels and fills stock outs in a timely manner. Routinely checks pharmaceutical expiration dates, replacing or properly disposing of outdated and unusable medications. Assists in receiving, un-packaging, sorting, and restocking of pharmaceuticals and supplies into their appropriate locations. Accurately and efficiently fills, labels, and delivers medications and assists in maintaining accurate inventory in automation, including to offsite locations. Maintains a working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, pharmacology, and pharmacotherapy.
Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesAbility to operate basic computer applications. Ability to calculate dilution and dosing problems. Ability to operate a variety of automation.
Professional ExperienceAt least 18 years of age, required Twelve months of pharmacy experience, preferred.
EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent, required. Pharmacy Technician Diploma, preferred. Associates in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), Bachelor of Arts (BA), or Bachelor of Science (BS), preferred.
Licensure, Certification, RegistrationRegistration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners as a Certified Pharmacy Technician or Technician Trainee prior to the first day of employment required. Nationally certified by an accredited technician certification board sufficient to qualify for IBOP Registration Status, required. Currently, accredited boards are the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) and the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Valid Driver's License required. Must meet insurability requirements for purposes of utilizing Mercy vehicles - must be at least age 18 required. Must provide and maintain a good driving record, documented at hire, by a copy of a Motor Vehicle Record.
