Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED required.
  • Level II: 3+ years of pharmacy technician experience; active Oklahoma Pharmacy Technician permit within 6 weeks.
  • Level III: Associate's degree; 5+ years of experience; active permit within 6 weeks; National Pharamacy Technician Certification (CPhT).

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, labels, and delivers medications under pharmacist supervision.
  • Fills ADCs, unit dose cassettes, and medication carts with accuracy.
  • Performs sterile and non-sterile compounding including IV admixtures, chemotherapy, and TPN per USP 797/800.
  • Restocks crash carts and decentralized locations; maintains inventory.
  • Documents orders in the pharmacy information system and EMR; participates in daily inventory counts.
  • Onboards and trains Pharmacy Technician I staff; maintains safety and workflow standards.

General Description

The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician role responsible for performing a wide range of inpatient pharmacy technician duties related to medication preparation, distribution, inventory management, and sterile compounding under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role demonstrates increasing independence, supports daily inpatient pharmacy operations, and serves as a resource and mentor to Pharmacy Technician staff.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepares, labels, and delivers medications accurately and timely under pharmacist supervision.
  • Independently fills automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), unit dose cassettes, and medication carts, ensuring accuracy and compliance with established procedures.
  • Performs sterile and non-sterile compounding, including IV admixtures, chemotherapy, and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in accordance with USP 797/800, and departmental standards.
  • Restocks and maintains crash carts, emergency kits, and decentralized pharmacy locations according to established schedules and documentation requirements.
  • Accurately enters, fills, and documents medication orders in the pharmacy information system and electronic medical record.
  • Assists with batch preparation of sterile products and supports workflow in the IV room or other assigned areas.
  • Maintains cleanliness, organization, and inventory within assigned pharmacy work areas, including IV rooms and satellite locations.
  • Troubleshoots routine issues with automated dispensing cabinets, barcode scanning, and medication distribution workflows.
  • Monitors medication inventory levels, expiration dates, and usage trends to prevent shortages or waste, escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Assists with receiving, checking in, and shelving medications and supplies from vendors.
  • Participates in daily physical inventory counts and reports unreconciled discrepancies promptly to pharmacy leadership.
  • Communicates effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare staff to resolve routine medication-related issues.
  • Assists with onboarding and training Pharmacy Technician I staff by demonstrating proper procedures and reinforcing safety and workflow expectations.
  • Complies with all regulatory, safety, infection control, and quality standards.
  • Completes annual skills assessments and competency validations.

Level II Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Experience: At least three (3) years of experience as a pharmacy technician required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Active permit as a Pharmacy Technician by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy within 6 weeks of hire.

Level III Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate's degree required.

Experience: At least five (5) years of experience as a pharmacy technician required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Active permit as a Pharmacy Technician by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy within 6 weeks of hire. National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) required.
