Job summary

MercyOne North Iowa is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Trainee to assist under supervision in preparing medications and supporting pharmacist tasks. This role emphasizes accurate order processing, regulatory compliance, and patient-centered service in a hospital setting.

Qualified candidates are currently in high school or hold a GED, and must pursue Iowa registration and national certification. The position is part-time, on-site, with variable rotating shifts and PRN hours.

Qualifications

• Must be in high school or hold a GED/diploma.
• Must obtain IA pharmacy technician registration before start.
• Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB or NHA) required prior to expiration of trainee registration.
• Basic math skills and good written/verbal communication are essential.

Responsibilities

• Learn to prepare medication orders, including sterile and non-sterile compounding; process physician orders for timely, accurate delivery.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards related to pharmacy operations, automation, billing and inventory (USP 795/797).
• Provide courteous, timely service to patients, visitors, and colleagues.

As a Pharmacy Technician Trainee At MercyOne, While Studying Towards Certification, Within Limits Of Current Training, And Under The Direct Supervision Of a Registered Pharmacist And General Supervision Of a Licensed Technician, The Pharmacy Technician Trainee Will

• Learn how to prepare medication orders, including both sterile and non-sterile compounds. processing physician medication orders to ensure medications are promptly, accurately, and safely delivered.
• Ensure all work meets regulatory compliance standards as related to the Pharmacy, Pharmacy Automation, Billing, and Inventory, USP 795 / 797.
• Provides courteous, cooperative, and timely service to patients, visitors, and colleagues.

General Requirements

• Complete ASHP didactic learning modules as assigned.
• Achieve a passing score on all quizzes and test related to ASHP didactic learning.
• Complete all experiential learning activities as assigned.
• Provides customer service to medical professionals.
• Follows all policies and procedures to allow for effective and efficient patient care.
• Actively participate in department daily huddles.
• Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist or Licensed Pharmacy Technician:
• Prepares, packages, and distributes medication orders per physician/pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures.
• Contributes to effective and quality operation of the department.
• Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation; files documentation; answers telephone and pneumatic tube; and handles cash transactions.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education

• Currently in High School, High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Registration with the State of Iowa as a pharmacy technician (or technician trainee if awaiting certification) upon hire and prior to starting position within the pharmacy.
• Pharmacy Technician Certification: National certification must be acquired and maintained from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), or the National Health career Association prior to the expiration date of a Pharmacy Technician in Training registration. (can be obtained at any point after starting work and prior to expiration date of technician trainee registration)
• Skills: Basic aptitude for 8th grade math along with good written and verbal communication will be assessed at the initial interview.
