Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program

Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC seeks a Pharmacy Technician Lead to train new staff, drive process improvements, and support pharmacists in patient care. You will oversee workflow prioritization, assist with compounding and dispensing under supervision, and handle medication delivery and inventory controls.

Two years of technician experience and NC Board registration are required; professional certification (CPhT/ExCPT) is preferred or waived if enrolled in a PharmD program.

Qualifications

• Two years of pharmacy technician experience required.
• Registration as a technician with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program.
• CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program; if enrolled, this can be waived for the duration of the PharmD program.

Responsibilities

• Performs expert training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions.
• Operates independently on process improvement projects and implements identified solutions.
• Assists the pharmacist in reprioritizing daily workflow to maintain patient care and schedule adjustments.
• Compounds and/or prepares medications under supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
• Delivers exchanges medications to the respective patient area and returns unused medications to the pharmacy.
• Documents pharmaceutical activities including patient billing, quality control and regulatory compliance.
• Responds to customers for assistance with pharmacy services such as medication delivery and information.
• Operates automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications per orders.
• Manages inventory, expiration date checks, and restocking.

Summary

This position leads technician training efforts, identifies and executes process improvement opportunities, and prioritizes workflow. In addition, the position provides support to the pharmacist by reviewing, compounding and dispensing medications. All work is carried out under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.

This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.

Responsibilities

• Performs expert training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions. Develops training materials, and completes training documentation.
• Operates independently on process improvement projects. Actively implements identified solutions.
• Assists the pharmacist in reprioritizing daily workflow to maintain patient care. Assists with schedule adjustments.
• Compounds and/or prepares medications (sterile products, oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) as authorized by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
• Delivers exchanges medications to the respective patient area and returns unused medications to the pharmacy.
• Documents pharmaceutical activities including patient billing for medications and equipment, quality control requirements, etc. using automated and paper systems. Ensures accuracy of data.
• Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy services such as medication delivery, drug information, etc.
• Operates and supports automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications for individual patients, according to pharmacist and physician orders.
• Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory, and completes expiration date management.
• Assures regulatory compliance for medication storage areas, including inspections and/or controlled substance inventories, USP797 and other regulatory documentation as required.

Education Requirements

• None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred. Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.

Licensure/Certification Requirements
