Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill is seeking a Pharmacy Technician Training Lead to oversee technician training, identify process improvements, and prioritize workflow. The role involves supporting the pharmacist by reviewing, compounding and dispensing medications under supervision.

This is a full-time, onsite evening position in Pharmacy Inpatient Operations. Compensation ranges from $19.98 to $28.54 per hour, with UNC Health benefits and a Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program totaling $5,000 spread

Qualifications

  • Two years of pharmacy technician experience required.
  • Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred.
  • Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.

Summary

This position leads technician training efforts, identifies and executes process improvement opportunities, and prioritizes workflow. In addition, the position provides support to the pharmacist by reviewing, compounding and dispensing medications. All work is carried out under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.

This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.

Responsibilities
  1. Performs expert training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions. Develops training materials, and completes training documentation.
  2. Operates independently on process improvement projects. Actively implements identified solutions.
  3. Assists the pharmacist in reprioritizing daily workflow to maintain patient care. Assists with schedule adjustments.
  4. Compounds and/or prepares medications (sterile products, oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) as authorized by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.
  5. Delivers exchanges medications to the respective patient area and returns unused medications to the pharmacy.
  6. Documents pharmaceutical activities including patient billing for medications and equipment, quality control requirements, etc. using automated and paper systems. Ensures accuracy of data.
  7. Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy services such as medication delivery, drug information, etc.
  8. Operates and supports automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications for individual patients, according to pharmacist and physician orders.
  9. Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory, and completes expiration date management.
  10. Assures regulatory compliance for medication storage areas, including inspections and/or controlled substance inventories, USP797 and other regulatory documentation as required.
Other Information
Education Requirements
  • None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred. Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
  • Registration as a technician with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program. If currently enrolled, an NCBOP Pharmacy Intern registration may be accepted.
  • CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program; if enrolled, this can be waived for the duration of the PharmD program.
Professional Experience Requirements
  • Two years of pharmacy technician experience required.
