Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC is seeking a per diem Certified Pharmacy Technician to support the pharmacist by reviewing, compounding and dispensing medications under supervision.

The role requires NC Board of Pharmacy registration (or PharmD intern status), completion of a technician training program, and prior experience is preferred; salary range $18.48–$25.89 per hour; onsite with variable hours.

Responsibilities

• Compounds and prepares medications (sterile, oral, topical, controlled substances) under supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
• Delivers medications to patient areas and returns unused medications to the pharmacy.
• Documents pharmaceutical activities including patient billing and quality control requirements.
• Responds to customer requests for medication information and pharmacy services.
• Operates automated dispensing technology to supply medications per orders.
• Manages inventory, restocks, and expiration date controls.
• Assists with training new employees and supports process improvement projects.
• Completes regulatory compliance inspections and related documentation.

Summary

The Certified Technician provides support to the pharmacist by reviewing, compounding and dispensing medications. All work is carried out under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.

Responsibilities

• Compounds and/or prepares medications (sterile products, oral, topical, controlled substances, etc.) including high-risk medication processes as defined by the entity, as authorized by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist.


• Delivers exchanges medications to the respective patient area and returns unused medications to the pharmacy.


• Documents pharmaceutical activities including patient billing for medications and equipment, quality control requirements, etc. using automated and paper systems. Ensures accuracy of data.


• Responds to and triages requests from customers for assistance with pharmacy services such as medication delivery, drug information, etc.


• Operates and supports automated dispensing technology to supply correct medications for individual patients, according to pharmacist and physician orders.


• Orders, receives, restocks, and rotates inventory, and completes expiration date management.


• Assists with training of new employees, educating them in job-specific functions.


• Contributes to process improvement projects.


• Completes regulatory compliance inspection of medication storage areas, including inspections and/or controlled substance inventories, USP797 and other regulatory documentation as required.

Education Requirements

• None required as long as other position qualifications are met. Completion of an academic pharmacy technician training program preferred. Current enrollment in PharmD program if working as a registered pharmacy intern with NC Board of Pharmacy.

Licensure/Certification Requirements

• Registration as a technician with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program. If currently enrolled, an NCBOP Pharmacy Intern registration may be accepted.


• CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program; if enrolled, this can be waived for the duration of the PharmD program.

Professional Experience Requirements

• Prior pharmacy technician experience is preferred.
