JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Practitioner in Medical Specialty is a licensed, certified healthcare provider who delivers direct patient care, possesses delegated prescriptive authority, and is credentialed and privileged within the healthcare system, billing independently as recognized by Medicare and Medicaid. The Advanced Practice Provider offers medical care within the scope defined by the supervising physician, working in specialty clinics such as Palliative Care, Pulmonary, Infectious Disease, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Urology, Nephrology, Neurology, Hematology, Oncology, Allergy and Immunology, Rheumatology, or other specialties.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
  1. Assess patients' physical and mental conditions through comprehensive or problem-focused examinations and histories.
  2. Order, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and diagnostic tests to determine patient needs.
  3. Prescribe and recommend medical therapies, perform procedures per protocols, and advise on behavioral modifications for health risks.
  4. Develop and implement patient treatment plans based on assessments, evidence-based practices, and standards, collaborating with physicians and team members as needed. Evaluate patient responses and care effectiveness.
  5. Counsel patients and families on medical processes, medication management, nutrition, and health promotion, including potential drug interactions and side effects.
  6. Maintain detailed records of treatment plans and outcomes; initiate referrals when necessary.
  7. Provide consultation services related to the provider’s specialty and training.
  8. Manage patients in various healthcare settings beyond primary clinics, such as inpatient or emergency services.
  9. Perform invasive procedures within scope and competency, delegated by supervising physicians.
  10. Perform additional patient care duties as required to meet department coverage needs.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
  • Knowledge of diagnosing and treating injuries, diseases, and deformities, including symptoms, treatments, drug interactions, and preventive care.
  • Understanding of diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency with computers and related software.
  • Ability to develop comprehensive, outcomes-based treatment plans.
  • Skills in patient counseling regarding medical and psychological conditions.
  • Ability to interpret diagnostic tests effectively.
  • Valid Texas RN license or RN license with compact privilege, and current Texas Nurse Practitioner license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire or transfer.
  • Certification from an accredited board as an APRN for the relevant patient population.
