Job summary

Anderson Hospital is seeking a skilled ICD-10/ICD-10-PCS coder to assign diagnoses and procedures for inpatient and related records. You will review medical records, coordinate with clinicians for clarity, and use coding software to select accurate codes.

You will uphold AHIMA ethics and work with auditors to ensure compliance. You will also educate peers, collaborate with clinical departments, and maintain high-quality coding standards while ensuring regulatory compliance and medical necessity

Qualifications

• Education level: Associate Degree or higher.
• RHIT, RHIA, or CCS preferred.
• Hospital experience with ICD-10 and CPT preferred.

Responsibilities

• Reviews the medical record for selection of principal and all secondary diagnoses and principal and all secondary procedures.
• Works with medical staff for clarification to support accurate code assignment.
• Utilizes coding software to select the appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes.
• Maintains AHIMA ethical code of behavior.
• Collaborates with internal and external auditors.
• Participates in ongoing education to stay current with coding changes.
• Works with other departments, especially clinical areas, to understand impact on coding process.
• Maintains coding quality and productivity per department standards.
• Creates coding summaries.
• Coordinates with PI technicians in transferring records for peer review activities.
• Maintains knowledge of medical necessity as it pertains to coding responsibilities.
• Keeps up-to-date with state and federal regulations to ensure coding accuracy.

Job Responsibilities:

• 1. Reviews the medical record for selection of the principal and all secondary diagnosis and principal and all secondary procedures.
• 2. Works with the medical staff should there be any clarification needed regarding a complete and accurate medical record to support the code assignment.
• 3. Utilizes coding software to select the appropriate diagnosis and procedure code numbers.
• 4. Maintains AHIMA Ethical code of Behavior.
• 5. Works with internal and external auditors.
• 6. Participates in educational process, reading of support references and newsletters to keep abreast of coding changes.
• 7. Works with other departments, especially clinical areas to maintain awareness of the impact of their work on the coding process.
• 8. Maintains coding quality and productivity per department standards.
• 9. Creates coding summary.
• 10. Works with the PI technician in the transfer of records required to accomplish all peer review activities.
• 11. Maintains knowledge of medical necessity as it pertains to their coding responsibility
• 12. Maintains knowledge of state and federal regulation to assure accuracy of coding

Education Requirements and Other Requirements:

Education level: Associate Degree or higher

Certification/Licensure: RHIT, RHIA, or CCS preferred

Experience Requirements: Hospital experience using ICD-10 and CPT preferred
