Job summary

Cognizant is hiring an Inpatient Coder (CCS Certified) to support one or more Cognizant clients in a remote, work-from-home environment. The role requires 3+ years of facility-based inpatient coding and CCS/RHIT/RHIA/CPC/CIC credentials.

You will code ICD-10-CM diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS procedures, query physicians, and participate in peer reviews to uphold quality. Responsibilities include using an electronic encoder, producing reports, and maintaining high accuracy while meeting productivity

Qualifications

• Active CCS, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, or CIC credential.
• Three years of facility-based inpatient coding experience.
• Level 1 Trauma coding experience.
• Epic experience.
• Familiarity with federal, state, and payer regulations.

Responsibilities

Inpatient Coder (CCS Certified) – Remote

Location: Remote (work from home office)

Job Summary

The Inpatient Coder is a key role supporting one or more Cognizant clients, responsible for reviewing medical documentation and accurately assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes. This role works independently and as part of a team, queries physicians to clarify documentation, and supports coding quality through peer review, while meeting accuracy and productivity standards in a fast-paced remote environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Review documentation to code diagnoses (ICD-10-CM) and procedures (ICD-10-PCS).
• Communicate with physicians to obtain or clarify diagnoses and/or procedures through the query process.
• Assign accurate codes using an electronic encoder application in accordance with practice policy and regulatory guidelines.
• Perform peer reviews of company Health Information Management coding auditors and coders.
• Complete reports as requested.
• Maintain a minimum accuracy rate of 98%.
• Meet inpatient productivity expectations: 16 encounters per day, 2 encounters per hour, and 30 minutes to code each encounter.
• Work in multiple systems at the same time.
• Coordinate with your manager and team on scheduled time off, breaks, and new procedures and policies provided by the client.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Coding credential: CCS, RHIT or RHIA (AHIMA), or CPC or CIC (AAPC).
• Minimum of three years of facility-based inpatient experience (ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, MS-DRG).
• Level 1 Trauma coding experience required.
• Epic experience required.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and payer regulations.
• Ability to interpret medical records, reports, and chart entries.
• Ability to apply judgment and make decisions.
• Ability to work independently and as a team member, and to stay organized across multiple projects.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Flexibility and adaptability to change.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and basic computer skills.

Requirements

• Active CCS, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, or CIC credential
• Three years of facility-based inpatient coding experience
• Level 1 Trauma coding experience
• Epic experience
• Pass the coding assessment with a score of 80% or higher

Compensation

The annual salary for this position is between $63,000 – $71,000, depending on experience and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
