Job description

Candidates must reside in one of the following states to be considered: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, or Wisconsin.

Candidates will be required to take and pass an IP coding assessment. Access to an encoder is necessary to complete the assessment.

Description

The Inpatient Medical Coder is responsible for accurately coding clinical services provided by physicians for insurance purposes, defending their audits, and writing queries to obtain additional information from physicians. This role requires proficiency in using EPIC Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and 3M encoder systems. Candidates must be adaptable to support various hospitals within regional and university facilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Work Queue Management: Log in to work queues and apply appropriate codes to clinical services provided by physicians.
  2. Audit Defense: Defend audits by providing detailed explanations and justifications for coding decisions.
  3. Query Writing: Write queries to request additional information from physicians, which is then used to determine the best way to code clinical services for insurance purposes.
  4. DRG and CDI Review: Review and question Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) queries, ensuring they do not affect Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) coding unless necessary.
  5. System Proficiency: Utilize EPIC EMR and 3M encoder systems to perform coding tasks efficiently.
  6. Facility Support: Support regional and university facilities as needed, supporting varying lengths of stay, typically 3-5 days.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

Experience in academic hospitals handling high acuity cases and trauma situations is required. Candidates should have experience in rehabilitation and long-term acute care (LTAC) settings, as well as inpatient audit experience. Trauma centers are classified into five levels, and the candidate should be familiar with these designations.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $41.00/hr.
