Job summary

Select Medical is seeking an entry-level inpatient coder to review multidisciplinary inpatient records and assign accurate ICD-10-PCS codes and DRGs. This on-site role at our Mechanicsburg, PA location offers a structured training path and collaboration with a dedicated healthcare team.

Responsibilities include coding accuracy, documentation clarification with clinicians, and contributing to data quality initiatives. Prior coding internship or coursework is beneficial for success in this role.

Qualifications

• Completed medical coding education program with emphasis on inpatient coding.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate documentation of patient care to code and abstract data used for statistics and reporting.
• Assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes to inpatient diagnoses, treatments and procedures according to guidelines.
• Complete coding with accuracy while maintaining productivity and quality standards.
• Communicate with physicians and staff when documentation needs clarification for accurate code assignment.
• Prepare workload reports and participate in data quality reviews and audits.
• Perform peer review of codes and DRG assignments.
• Keep up to date with coding regulations and practice guidelines.

Starting Pay

$24.50/hour, based on experience

Entry-level position responsible for reviewing multidisciplinary inpatient medical records and health information in order to classify patient diagnoses and procedures by accurate ICD-10-PCS codes and DRGs.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate documentation of patient care to code and abstract data used for statistics, state reporting, reimbursement, and other needs.
• Assign ICD-10-CM codes to inpatient diagnoses, treatments and procedures according to coding guidelines.
• Complete coding with an error rate within the work standard and maintain standards relative to productivity and quality.
• Communicate verbally and in writing with physicians, medical staff, and other care professionals when documentation needs clarification for accurate code assignment, which may or may not impact reimbursement.
• Prepare workload reports and participate in department management studies, as well as data quality reviews or other documentation audits.
• Perform peer review of codes and DRG assignment.
• Keep knowledge of coding and DRG assignment current by reviewing federal publications and other reference materials for changes in regulations and practice guidelines.
• Monitor compliance with documentation standards required for accurate and thorough coding
• Investigate, evaluate and identify opportunities for documentation improvement
• Guide hospital CEOs, medical staff, and others regarding compliant documentation practices required for accurate reimbursement and statistics

Minimum Requirements

• Completed medical coding education program with emphasis on inpatient coding
• Excellent oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• RHIA, RHIT, CCS or CPC-H credentials.
• Experience in ICD-10-CM diagnoses, procedure coding and DRG validation.
• One or more years of experience with inpatient hospital medical records coding.
