Physicians provide a comprehensive range of primary and specialty care services at the 333-bed hospital and outpatient facilities both on and off of the Eskenazi Health downtown campus including at a network of Eskenazi Health Center sites located throughout Indianapolis.

Job Role Summary


The Inpatient Clinical Dietitian II proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health’s mission to Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve with a special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. The Inpatient Clinical Dietitian II functions as part of the multidisciplinary team and provides nutritional care in general medical and higher acuity patient units.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Provides patient-centered medical nutrition therapy using the Nutrition Care Process: Evaluates the nutritional status of the patient, develops care plans following the established standards of care, provides the proper nutritional counseling to patients and their families that is age-specific, cultural, religious, and ethnic sensitive for health and disease promotion/prevention and wellness.
• Utilizes prescriptive authority within the regulations of the institution and legislative bodies to order diets, supplements, enteral nutrition and labs.
• Utilizes the Nutrition Focused Physical Exam to assist in the diagnosis of malnutrition of the patient.
• Evaluates for the appropriateness of enteral and parenteral nutrition support and provides the necessary recommendations. Maintains knowledge of nutritional supplements and formulary, and recommends changes as needed.
• Monitors and provides follow up plans for nutritional status in accordance with the patient’s treatment goals and practice standards, as well as referring patients for outpatient nutrition therapy as appropriate
• Consults with other health care professionals and members of the interdisciplinary team to manage patient care across the continuum; implements nutrition intervention(s) including communicating the nutrition care plan.
• Maintains accuracy in documentation, including NCP format and calculations, while meeting established productivity metrics and assigned deadlines.
• Collaborates with clinical nutrition team to assure patient care needs are met in all areas, promoting teamwork and planning cross coverage. Serves as a mentor for dietetic interns, and new staff.
• Leads and organizes participation and involvement in at least one clinical, community or professional development activity annually (as approved by leadership).
• Performs outcomes evaluation and research activities and by monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the nutrition care provided and reporting results. Translates research findings into meaningful language and concepts and practical and usable information, resulting in the utilization of outcome data.
• Participates in the revision of nutrition-related policies and procedures, education materials, clinical forms, and protocols, implements newest available evidence based practice, and available organizational guidelines.

Job Requirements
  • Registered Dietitian who maintains active registration, including continuing education, by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics; Licensed Dietitian in the state of Indiana.
  • Master’s Degree required per CDR requirements
  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Registered Dietitian
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of Occupational Safety & Health administration (OSHA), The Joint Commission standards (JCAHO), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), and Indiana State Department of Health regulations as it relates to nutrition care, patient education and safety
• General knowledge of nutrient analysis, word processing, spreadsheet software and other computer programs as required for patient documentation, patient health information, and departmental related reports and projects
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in dealing with diverse patient populations and health care team member.
