This position provides education, support, and safety items to prevent unintentional injuries of children at WVU Medicine Children's. Responsibilities include assessing the safety and educational needs of children and their families, planning interventions, and implementing safety plans. The role also involves assisting the Program Coordinator in maintaining and disseminating the Injury Prevention and Safety Program at WVU Children's Hospital/Jon Michael Moore Trauma Center and promoting childhood safety through community participation.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Bachelor's Degree in a health-related or social services field; OR Associate's Degree with two (2) years' experience in child safety education.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification within 90 days of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Special Needs Training Certification.
Core Duties and Responsibilities

The following are general responsibilities; other duties may be assigned:

  • Provide services aligned with the mission and vision of Children's Hospital.
  • Assess child passenger safety and sleep environment post-birth or NICU/PICU stay; implement safety measures as needed.
  • Inspect car seats, assess infant and medical conditions, and recommend or provide appropriate seats.
  • Educate on proper car seat use per manufacturer guidelines, AAP, Safe Kids, and NHTSA standards.
  • Provide safe sleep education and equipment if necessary.
  • Position and assess infants in car seats, collaborate with medical teams, and provide loaner seats if needed.
  • Educate caregivers on safety topics including child passenger safety, safe sleep, and home childproofing.
  • Follow best practice guidelines from relevant authorities.
  • Deliver high-quality, family-centered care.
  • Assess safety needs following injuries and develop safety education materials.
  • Participate in community events and collaborate with partners.
  • Maintain data records, evaluate activities, and manage program expenditures.
  • Pursue professional development and maintain competencies.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as moving, stooping, and reaching.
  • Work around infectious diseases and in various environments, including outdoors and community settings.
  • Must be able to drive and may require overnight or weekend work.
Work Environment

Skills and Abilities
  • Mastery of current best practices for childhood injury prevention.
  • Training in Safe to Sleep and Period of Purple Crying initiatives.
  • Knowledge of child safety restraints and seat belt systems.
  • Excellent communication skills for education and collaboration.
  • Awareness of risk factors for abuse and neglect, with the ability to recognize warning signs and report concerns.
  • Knowledge of specialized restraints.
