Position Description
Position Overview: Join our dynamic manufacturing team at Applied Medical as an Injection Molding Engineering Technician. In this hands-on role, you will be instrumental in optimizing our injection molding processes, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring the highest quality in our medical device components. You will work closely with engineers and production operators, applying your mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills to tackle complex manufacturing challenges. This role is a perfect fit for individuals who are passionate about manufacturing, enjoy hands-on work, and are eager to contribute to the advancement of medical technology.
Key Responsibilities:
- Root Cause Analysis and Problem Solving: Conduct thorough root cause analysis and implement effective corrective actions for complex manufacturing issues.
- Process Development and Optimization: Utilize knowledge of mechanical and material properties to assist in process development and optimization by implementing and testing process improvements.
- Product and Process Qualification: Execute product process qualification protocols, collecting data and documenting results.
- Equipment Troubleshooting and Process Improvement: Perform basic to intermediate troubleshooting of injection molding machines, and implement process improvements, such as updating injection molding process parameters and conducting efficiency studies.
- Data Analysis and Technical Skills: Utilize statistical analysis to interpret data, analyze laboratory results, and improve process control, and apply working knowledge of CAD modeling, such as SolidWorks, to assist in the design of fixtures and support manufacturing processes.
Performance Objectives:
Within your first 30 days:
- Complete all Applied Learning foundational courses and review relevant documentation, including standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and quality records, to understand the process flow and organizational procedures.
- Become familiar with the specific materials used in the injection molding process, including their properties and handling requirements.
- Learn the basic functionality and operation of the injection molding machines, furnaces, and other equipment used in the process, gaining proficiency in basic operation under supervision.
- Understand the basic functionality of the de-binding and sintering processes.
- Familiarize yourself with Applied Medical’s QMS, including quality policies, procedures, and relevant injection molding standards.
- Understand and adhere to safety protocols while operating injection molding equipment and handling materials.
- Learn to accurately document process parameters and quality checks.
- Shadow experienced technicians and operators to learn best practices and gain practical insights into the production process.
Within 60 days:
- Demonstrate proficiency in operating assigned injection molding equipment under supervision, including basic troubleshooting.
- Assist in monitoring and adjusting process parameters to maintain product quality.
- Assist in performing basic preventative maintenance on equipment.
- Actively participate in team meetings and contribute to collaborative efforts related to production and troubleshooting.
Within 90 days to 1 year:
- Develop proficiency in troubleshooting common injection molding process issues and equipment malfunctions, under guidance.
- Assist in root cause analysis investigations.
- Assist in continuous improvement initiatives related to the injection molding process, under supervision.
- Develop specialized expertise in assigned areas of the injection molding process through training and guidance, such as furnace operation or material handling.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of measurement tools related to the injection molding process.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements and quality system standards through accurate documentation and adherence to procedures.
Position Requirements
- High School Diploma, technical trade school training, or equivalent technical experience.
- Hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally with exposure to injection molding.
- Mechanical aptitude and strong problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of CAD modeling, including SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis and data interpretation.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
- Genuine interest in medical device manufacturing.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
Preferred
- Associate’s degree in a science-related field
- Experience in a medical device manufacturing organization.
- Polymer or materials science background.
- Experience with furnace or heat treating or metallurgy.
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles.
- Experience with injection molding processes.
- Knowledge in one or more of the following fields: Electrical, Hydraulic, and Pneumatic.
