Your role and responsibilities

IBM Quantum is hiring a Laboratory Engineer to support our quantum processors. The ideal candidate will have experimental skills, proficiency in lab work, programming, and data analysis. Responsibilities include performing routine experimental measurements, setting up new experimental platforms under guidance from research scientists and senior engineers, and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. The candidate should communicate technical ideas effectively, work independently and as part of a team, and take initiative.

This role involves hands-on activities in the quantum labs, including but not limited to:

  • Cryostat operation and modifications, wiring, and mechanics
  • Assembly of active electronic modules (PCBs, covers) and magnetic shielding cans
  • DC testing of room temperature modules
  • Cryogenic testing using automated scripts
  • Troubleshooting test setups
  • Evaluation of ESD-sensitive components
  • Inventory management
  • Using test equipment like vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, and frequency synthesizers

Required education

Bachelor's Degree

Preferred education

Master's Degree

Required technical and professional expertise

Education at the BS or MS level in quantum computing, physics, electrical engineering, or materials science

Preferred experience

At least 2 years in quantum computing or related fields, experience with superconducting quantum devices, microwave engineering, quantum characterization, and programming (Python preferred). Experience interfacing analog microwave test environments with computer systems is also desirable.
