Job summary

WithersRavenel in Cary, NC seeks a Project Engineer to help communities plan and improve water and wastewater infrastructure through asset management, data analysis, and long-term planning.

You will work hybrid from our Cary office, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, lead technical tasks, develop reports, and mentor junior staff while delivering practical, client-focused solutions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in civil, environmental engineering or a related field.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) preferred/required.
  • 4+ years of water/wastewater engineering, utility infrastructure, asset management or related consulting experience.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong leadership, problem solving, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Asset Management Plans for water and wastewater utilities.
  • Evaluate infrastructure condition, perform risk assessments, and support capital planning.
  • Analyze asset data to prioritize maintenance, rehabilitation, and replacement strategies.
  • Serve as technical resource for municipal clients; present findings to clients and stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports and other project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions and build client relationships.

At WithersRavenel, our Asset Management team partners with municipalities across North Carolina to help them understand, prioritize, and plan for the future of their infrastructure systems. As a Project Engineer, you'll play a key role in delivering meaningful projects that improve the reliability and sustainability of critical water and wastewater assets.

This opportunity is a hybrid role based out of our Cary, North Carolina office.

What You'll Do
  • Support the development of Asset Management Plans for water and wastewater utilities.
  • Evaluate infrastructure condition and performance using GIS and available asset data, perform risk assessments, and support development of capital improvement planning.
  • Analyze asset condition and performance data to help clients prioritize maintenance, rehabilitation, and replacement strategies.
  • Serve as technical resource for municipal clients. Participate in client meetings and workshops. Present findings and recommendations to Clients and Stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports and other project deliverables.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions while building strong client relationships.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Environmental or related Engineering field
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • 4+ years of experience in water/wastewater engineering, utility infrastructure, asset management or related consulting services
  • Self-motivated, engaged, and team-oriented with the ability to work independently
  • Handle multiple tasks under pressure and prioritize responsibilities
  • Demonstrate leadership in engineering planning, asset management strategies/methodologies, and technical problem solving
  • Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail; excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to mentor and lead technical staff
  • Experience with GIS platforms (ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online), infrastructure data analysis, and municipal utility projects is preferred
  • Familiarity with asset management frameworks (e.g., ISO 55000) is a plus
  • IAM Certification preferred but not required
Working Conditions

The assignment may require infrequent evening/weekend work and job site visits outdoors. Candidates should enjoy working in collaborative, fast-paced, and client-driven environment.

Physical Requirements

The assignment may occasionally require repetitive physical tasks (such as operating a computer), standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time, extended time travelling in a vehicle, and carrying equipment and materials up to 25 pounds.
