Job summary

PNC is seeking an Infrastructure Configuration Consultant to monitor, analyze, and optimize mainframe performance, capacity, and resource utilization across the enterprise. This role supports stability and planning by delivering performance reporting and partnering with infrastructure teams.

You will work across multiple locations (PITTSBURGH PA, Strongsville/Cleveland OH, Birmingham AL, Phoenix AZ, Dallas TX or Denver CO) and coordinate with internal teams and vendors to maintain mainframe

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience supporting IBM mainframe environments, including z/OS operations, performance analysis, or capacity planning.
  • Working knowledge of mainframe performance data sources such as RMF, SMF, CA-MICS, or MXG.
  • Experience using SAS to manipulate data, create reports, and perform trend analysis.
  • Understanding of z/OS architecture, workload management, SDSF and TSO/E.
  • Knowledge of incident, problem, and change management in an enterprise setting.
  • Experience coordinating mainframe hardware activities with vendors and internal teams.

  • Produce and maintain performance and capacity reports for decision-making and planning.
  • Identify bottlenecks and optimization opportunities in CPU, memory, disk I/O, and WLM.
  • Support workload analysis and tuning across z/OS environments and job flow behavior.
  • Coordinate mainframe hardware maintenance and vendor engagements; keep code levels current.

As an Infrastructure Configuration Consultant within PNC's Technology organization, you can be based in Pittsburgh PA, Strongsville/Cleveland OH, Birmingham AL, Phoenix AZ, Dallas TX or Denver CO.

The Mainframe Capacity and Performance Analyst is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing mainframe system performance, capacity, and resource utilization across the enterprise environment. This role supports operational stability and strategic planning by producing performance reporting, identifying trends, recommending improvements, and partnering with infrastructure, engineering, and operations teams to maintain efficient and reliable mainframe services. The position also includes mainframe hardware support activities, including coordination of maintenance, code currency, and device implementation with internal teams and external vendors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze mainframe capacity, utilization, and performance trends using RMF, SMF, CA-MICS, MXG, SAS, Mainview, Systemware, and related reporting tools.
  • Produce and maintain daily, weekly, monthly, and ad hoc performance and capacity reports to support operational decision-making and long‑range planning.
  • Interpret system data to identify bottlenecks, performance issues, and optimization opportunities involving CPU, memory, disk I/O, workload management, and coupling facility activity.
  • Support workload analysis and tuning across z/OS environments, including WLM service classes, initiators, application environments, and job flow behavior.
  • Review and maintain knowledge of LPAR configurations, processor capacity, memory constraints, channel configurations, and overall system architecture.
  • Provide mainframe hardware support by coordinating with vendors and internal teams on microcode installation, hardware fixes, new device implementation, and maintaining current code levels on hardware management consoles.
  • Assist with incident, problem, and change management activities through established IT service management processes, including ServiceNow and enterprise change procedures.
  • Support software and configuration changes through established controls and deployment processes, including Endevor procedures and change governance standards.
  • Use diagnostic and monitoring tools such as Strobe, Syslog, OPSLOG, SDSF, and TSO/E utilities to investigate system behavior, troubleshoot issues, and support root cause analysis.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, engineering, operations, and project teams to support service reliability, capacity planning, and mainframe modernization or expansion initiatives.
  • Maintain familiarity with enterprise standards, reporting repositories, project tracking tools, and technical documentation sources required for the role.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience supporting IBM mainframe environments, including z/OS operations, performance analysis, or capacity planning.
  • Working knowledge of mainframe performance and accounting data sources such as RMF, SMF, CA-MICS, or MXG.
  • Experience using SAS or similar analytical tools to manipulate data, create reports, and perform trend analysis.
  • Understanding of z/OS architecture, workload management concepts, and core system utilities including SDSF and TSO/E.
  • Knowledge of incident, problem, and change management disciplines in an enterprise technology environment.
  • Experience supporting or coordinating mainframe hardware activities, including maintenance, vendor engagement, or device‑related changes.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Mainview, Systemware, Strobe, and related mainframe monitoring or performance tools.
  • Knowledge of coupling facility structures, XCF reporting, LPAR configuration management, and channel architecture.
  • Experience with ServiceNow, Endevor, JIRA, or similar enterprise workflow and change management platforms.
  • Familiarity with mainframe reporting frameworks, automation, and operational documentation practices.
  • Exposure to IBM z Systems hardware support, hardware management consoles, and vendor maintenance coordination.

Job Description
  • Manages the requirements for planning, organizing, and implementing enterprise‑wide technology infrastructure and configuration management functions.
  • Leads the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of major configuration changes from acquisition to termination.
  • Oversees the effective implementation and use of the configuration management process, methodology, tools, procedures, and audit activities.
  • Develops and publishes metrics to qualify and quantify configuration success; ensures that configuration practices are in compliance with standards.
  • Ensures the accuracy and validity of the configuration database for content on assets, major infrastructure and platform components, system documentation and service components.

Pay Transparency

Base Salary: $75,000.00 – $150,000.00

Salaries may vary based on geographic location, market data and on individual skills, experience, and education. This role is incentive eligible with the payment based upon company, business and/or individual performance.
