Job summary

The University of New Hampshire in Durham seeks a structured cabling technician to install, test, and maintain copper and fiber networks across campus facilities. You will manage termination, labeling, and documentation to ensure reliable data, voice, and video transmission.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certifications in structured cabling are desirable.
  • Knowledge of standards such as TIA/EIA-568, ANSI/TIA-942 or ISO/IEC 11801.
  • Proficiency in cable termination techniques for copper and fiber optics, including RJ-45, LC, SC, ST, MPO.
  • Experience with cable testing and certification tools such as cable analyzers, OTDRs, and power meters.
  • Familiarity with network equipment such as switches, routers, VOIP phones, and patch panels.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities.

Job description

Structured cabling technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting structured cabling systems within various environments, such as campus buildings, data centers, or telecommunications facilities. The primary role of a structured cabling technician is to ensure that all cabling infrastructure is properly designed, implemented, and tested to support the efficient and reliable transmission of data, voice, and video signals.

Job Duties
  • Plan, install, terminate, and test copper and fiber optic cabling systems, including horizontal cabling, backbone cabling, and patch panels.
  • Follow industry standards and best practices for cable routing, dressing, and labeling.
  • Use appropriate tools and equipment for cable termination, such as crimpers, punch-down tools, copper cable testers, fusion splicers, and OTDRs.
Network Equipment Installation
  • Mount, rack, and connect network equipment, such as switches, routers, wireless access points and VOIP phones, ensuring proper cable management and organization.
  • Coordinate with other technicians or network engineers for equipment placement and installation.
Cable Testing And Certification
  • Conduct cable testing and certification using specialized equipment, such as cable testers, cable analyzers, and optical power meters.
  • Verify cable performance parameters, including attenuation, impedance, crosstalk, and signal quality.
  • Identify and troubleshoot any cable-related issues to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Troubleshooting And Maintenance
  • Diagnose and resolve connectivity issues, signal loss, or other problems related to structured cabling systems.
  • Perform regular maintenance and inspections to ensure the integrity and reliability of the cabling infrastructure.
  • Replace faulty or damaged cables, connectors, or equipment as needed.
Documentation And Reporting
  • Maintain accurate records of cable installations, configurations, and test results.
  • Create and update technical documentation, including diagrams, schematics, and as-built drawings.
  • Maintain physical port inventory with location and port specific information in department database.
  • Provide detailed reports on completed work, including recommendations for improvements or upgrades.
Compliance And Safety
  • Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations while working with power tools, ladders, and other equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, such as TIA/EIA, ANSI/TIA, or ISO/IEC.
  • Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in structured cabling systems.
Team Collaboration
  • Collaborate with USNH Facilities project managers, network engineers, electricians, and other team members to plan and execute cabling projects.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for material procurement, delivery, and installation schedules.
  • Communicate effectively and provide technical guidance or support to other team members as required.
Requirements

  • Good communication and teamwork abilities to collaborate effectively with other team members and stakeholders.

Compensation Pay Range

$23.01 - $38.03
