Job description

The Information Technology team at the City of Irvine is seeking a dynamic and experienced Data Center Systems and Cloud Engineer to join a high-performing team responsible for designing, implementing, and managing data center and cloud infrastructure. This role is crucial for both daily operations and strategic projects, ensuring the stability, scalability, and security of hybrid environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cloud technologies, data center systems, and server management, with a focus on performance optimization, cost-efficiency, and compliance with industry standards. Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams are essential.

Vacancies and Recruitment

There are two full-time vacancies. This recruitment will establish an Eligibility List for the Information Technology Specialist I position, valid until 4/7/2026.

Your Impact

  1. Design, deploy, and maintain data center and cloud infrastructure solutions.
  2. Architect scalable and resilient systems to meet business and performance needs.
  3. Evaluate new technologies and recommend infrastructure improvements.
  4. Manage and optimize cloud services across platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
  5. Implement cloud governance and cost management strategies.
  6. Ensure security compliance in cloud environments.
  7. Develop automation scripts using tools like Saltstack, Terraform, or CloudFormation.
  8. Oversee provisioning, configuration, and deployment of infrastructure components.
  9. Monitor performance, availability, and capacity planning.
  10. Identify bottlenecks and optimize infrastructure efficiency.
  11. Implement monitoring and alerting solutions for proactive management.
  12. Enforce security best practices in data center and cloud environments.
  13. Design and test disaster recovery plans to ensure high availability.
  14. Manage change processes for infrastructure updates.
  15. Maintain documentation of configurations and procedures.
  16. Coordinate testing, validation, and communication during changes.
  17. Manage Office 365 deployments and integrations.
  18. Configure Office 365 services according to business needs.
  19. Manage Azure Active Directory, including user and group management.
  20. Implement SSO, MFA, and identity synchronization solutions.
  21. Participate in on-call rotations and respond to incidents.

Best Fit

  • Understanding of data center architecture, including servers, storage, networking, cooling, and power systems.
  • Knowledge of data center design principles like redundancy and scalability.
  • Experience with cloud platforms and core services.
  • Understanding of virtualization, containers, and hybrid/multi-cloud environments.
  • Experience with virtualization platforms and container orchestration.
  • Knowledge of security measures for data center and cloud.
  • Experience with monitoring tools and performance analysis.
  • Strong backup and disaster recovery knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Four years of IT experience in relevant technical or analytical roles.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
