Job description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a junior-to-mid level Information Systems Security Engineer (ISSE) to monitor vulnerabilities, identify risks, and secure systems used by Code 34 of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport (NUWCDIVNPT), located in Middletown, RI. An ideal candidate will possess prior experience with supporting cybersecurity risk and vulnerability assessment functions, hardening systems based upon risk assessments, and the Risk Management Framework (RMF) in a Navy or DoD environment.

Typical responsibilities include:

• Monitor vulnerability management scanning tools.
• Identify risks for workstations, servers, networks, and applications utilizing the IA scanning technique specific to the system, and propose solutions to mitigate identified risks.
• Install, maintain and integrate updates and fixes of hardware, operating systems, databases and application software to maintain cybersecurity posture of all Code 34 accredited systems.
• Harden and secure Code 34 systems in accordance with applicable Security Technical and Implementation Guide (STIGs), Information Assurance Vulnerability Alerts, Bulletins, and Technical (IAV-A/B/T) and report compliance using the corresponding system of record.
• Perform vulnerability scans on network information systems and closed enclaves using DoD and Department Navy (DON) approved tools and remediate vulnerability findings based on system scan recommendations.

Location: Full time onsite at Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport, RI.

Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. May also require physical activity including lifting/moving computer & server hardware assets, setting up workstations, laying network cable, and supporting other IT infrastructure activities.

Existing Secret Security Clearance Required: This position requires an existing DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate will already possess an Active or Interim Secret security clearance. A strongly qualified candidate with relevant NMCI/DoD experience but no current security clearance may be considered.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Qualified as a DOD 8140 Policy Cyber Workforce (CWF) Vulnerability Assessment Analyst (541) Basic or Intermediate. To qualify, must possess at least one of the following:
• Bachelors of Science (BS) degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, or similar, from an ABET accredited or CAE designated institution.
• OR, have completed the DISA-US1380 DCWF Vulnerability Assessment Analyst (VAA) course,
• OR, possess NEC 746A Information Systems Administrator,
• OR, possess one or more of the following certifications. Proof of active/current certification must be provided prior to a job offer being extended:
• Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
• CompTIA Cloud+
• CompTIA PenTest+
• CompTIA Security+
• GIAC Certified Enterprise Defender (GCED)
• GIAC Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP)
• At least two (2) years of relevant professional experience with monitoring, assessing, and identifying cybersecurity vulnerabilities, resolving/hardening systems based upon such assessments, or similar.
• An ideal candidate’s experience will have been obtained in a Navy/DoD/Federal environment.
• Proficiency with common productivity software including Microsoft Office.
• Strong communication skills, and the ability to interact with contractor, government, and active-duty military personnel.
