Job description

The Cornell University Department of Information Science (IS) in the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science has tenure-track and tenured faculty positions available. The IS department spans Cornell’s Ithaca and New York City campuses where nearly 40 faculty members are leaders in their respective fields within Information Science's interdisciplinary structure.

We are interested in applications from researchers in any of the broad research areas of the department (see https://infosci.cornell.edu/research). This year, we are particularly interested in candidates whose research explores the role of computing and AI in education and learning, including in global environments beyond the United States. Outstanding applicants outside this area may also be considered. We seek candidates who bring a range of methodological approaches to bear on research problems, including the design, building, development, theoretical analysis, and application of computing and AI systems to address needs, as well as social science methods to investigate interactions between people and systems.

Faculty hired for this Ithaca campus search will have their teaching and research based in Ithaca. The IS faculty are located in Cornell’s Gates Hall and the new Computing and Information Science building. The department has strong connections with several other units on campus, including Computer Science, Communication, Economics, Sociology, Science and Technology Studies, Statistics and Data Science, Operations Research and Information Engineering, Cognitive Science, and the Law School. These connections support the IS department’s mission to advance its understanding of how people and society interact with computing and information.

The department strives to offer a high quality of life, providing a collegial and supportive atmosphere on campus. Beyond campus, Ithaca is in the heart of the Finger Lakes region, and both Cornell and Ithaca offer a vibrant cultural life and a wide range of sporting and outdoor activities close at hand. Cornell also seeks to meet the needs of dual career couples, with both its own Dual Career program and membership in the Upstate New York Higher Education Recruitment Consortium to assist in dual career searches.

There is a salary range of $83,200 - $357,300 for positions like this one at Cornell; this range reflects an aggregate of qualifications and disciplines across Cornell University. Actual salary offers will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills. Consistent with Cornell’s practice, appointment to academic positions requires candidates to disclose relevant information about their prior employment including whether they have been found to have violated institutional or employer policies related to or governing unlawful discrimination and harassment, academic and research misconduct, or financial misconduct.

Cornell welcomes students, faculty, and staff with diverse backgrounds from across the globe to pursue world-class education and career opportunities, to further the founding principle of “... any person ... any study.” No person shall be denied employment on the basis of any legally protected status or subjected to prohibited discrimination involving, but not limited to, such factors as race, ethnic or national origin, citizenship and immigration status, color, sex, pregnancy or pregnancy-related conditions, age, creed, religion, actual or perceived disability (including persons associated with such a person), arrest and/or conviction record, military or veteran status, sexual orientation, gender expression and/or identity, an individual’s genetic information, domestic violence victim status, familial status, marital status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.

Cornell University embraces diversity in its workforce and seeks job candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We hire based on merit and encourage people from historically underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. Consistent with federal law, Cornell engages in affirmative action in employment for qualified protected veterans as defined in the Vietnam Era Veterans’ Readjustment Assistance Act (VEVRRA) and qualified individuals with disabilities under Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act. We also recognize a lawful preference in employment practices for Native Americans living on or near Indian reservations in accordance with applicable law.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree by August 2027. Candidates should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae (CV), a research statement, a teaching statement, and the names of at least three people who will provide reference letters. The cover letter and research statement should highlight up to three of the candidate’s most significant pieces of work for consideration.
