Description

Teacher Aides work as part of a teaching team to provide children with a developmentally appropriate learning environment and experiences to help them develop socially, intellectually, physically, and emotionally. They assist in planning, record keeping, and other classroom duties as required by the program and licensing.

They support the design, planning, and implementation of a quality early childhood education classroom, aligning with the program’s philosophy and curriculum. The role requires skills and the ability to accept children and adults from diverse backgrounds. Teacher Aides serve as role models for developmentally appropriate practices and assist with classroom setup and management. They work under the direction of the classroom teacher.

REPORTS TO: Site Supervisor/Manager

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

Classroom Duties:

  1. Assist in preparing and implementing activities suitable for the children’s age, skills, and social development.
  2. Help plan activities for assigned groups of children.
  3. Maintain an attractive, clean, and functional environment, including cleaning up before and after meals, washing dishes, and sweeping/mopping floors.
  4. Help keep the environment appealing by tidying toys, cleaning tables, and setting up or taking down equipment.
  5. Maintain ratio requirements, supervise the classroom and outdoor areas visually, and intervene to prevent injuries. Engage and encourage children during activities.
  6. Follow program policies, health and safety regulations, and emergency procedures, and be prepared to implement them.
  7. Report concerns or observations about children or the environment to the teacher or supervisor.

ADMINISTRATIVE:

  1. Know emergency procedures and be prepared to carry them out, including fire drills, earthquake procedures, CPR, and first aid. Complete monthly Safety Checklists as required.
  2. Assist with record keeping such as food program documentation, attendance, child assessments, and observations (e.g., DRDPs, ERS, ASQ). Observe and record information for portfolios or assessment files.

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY:

Substitute Teachers work under the direction of the classroom teacher. They must consult with the teacher regarding changes to planned activities, accidents, or concerns involving children, and cannot alter work hours without approval from the Site Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must be 18+ years old (per Licensing Regulations)
  • Enrolled in college classes working toward at least an Associate Teacher permit
  • Some experience with children from birth to five years or early childhood units

COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to verbally communicate in English with parents and adults, using grammatically correct language, and speak in the child’s home language when possible.

PREFERRED LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to communicate with children in their native language; bilingual skills may be required in some classrooms.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Submit and maintain a clear Criminal Background Check/Fingerprinting
  2. Provide evidence of a recent (within last year) negative Tuberculin test and health report
  3. Obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification within 3 months of employment
  4. Work cooperatively with the development team to achieve classroom and center goals
  5. Be physically, mentally, and occupationally capable of actions such as reaching, hearing, reacting to dangers, crouching, lifting up to 40 pounds, and interacting with children at their level
  6. Follow policies for handling confidential information and documentation
  7. Comply with Child Protective Services mandates and report suspected child abuse
  8. Ensure classroom compliance with Community Care Licensing rules and regulations
  9. Adhere to all organizational policies, including the Parent and Employee Handbooks
  10. Submit timely and accurate time records and expense reimbursements
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
