About Wah Mei:

Wah Mei School is the first Chinese American bilingual school to be established in San Francisco. Since our first class in 1974, our preschool program successfully promotes multiculturalism in developmental activities that emphasize both learning and playing for our participants. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing high quality Chinese-English bi/trilingual multicultural environment that promotes children’s development while building a supportive community for their families. Our programs now include Early Care & Education, Before and Afterschool, Weekend Chinese Classes, and Summer Programs at multiple sites.

About the role

Teachers will plan, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive preschool program in a multicultural setting. All teachers will use the Inquiry/Project based approach in the classroom to support development in early literacy, gross motor, mathematics, language development, science, art, diversity, and enrichment, aligned with creative curriculum. Teachers play a critical role in promoting a positive atmosphere in the classroom and must model Wah Mei’s core values to employ bicultural education to prepare children to be global citizens in a fun and developmentally appropriate environment, nurture the uniqueness of each child, encourage and foster diversity, and maintain deep, trusting and collaborative relationships with families and the community.

What you’ll do
  • Nurture and teach preschoolers to provide a safe and creative learning environment, including individualized attention to help each child develop new competencies and learn to interact effectively; manage classroom effectively including during mealtime and outdoor play
  • May provide service in the care, development, and instruction of children
  • Collaborate within the teaching team to plan and deliver an expansive curriculum that utilizes a variety of educational techniques to improve social competencies, and build self-esteem; adapt the lesson plans based on the interests and abilities of all of the children in the classroom
  • Maintain knowledge of ECE best practices, and incorporate effective tools (such as DRDP, ASQ and ASQ-SE) to understand the children’s developmental stages; and ECERS and CLASS tools to guide goal setting and professional development for the classroom environment
  • Ensure that all children are being supervised at all times; identify and respond to behavioral signals from children that indicate a need to adapt teaching style to meet an individual child’s emotional or intellectual developmental needs
  • Build positive relationships with caregivers to foster a connected community: communicate daily with caregivers any necessary information regarding the child’s health, safety, and developmental growth
  • Foster an inclusive classroom culture that values and reflects diversity
  • Actively engage with children during outdoor play while ensuring supervision and safety
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences
  • Use current program softwares for daily operation use for communication to parents/guardians, staff, and other parties
  • Attend agency and department professional development day(s)
  • Maintain accurate records for attendance, meals; follow up with parents regarding attendance
  • Model respectful nurturing interactions with children and families
  • Follow daily routines, including feeding, diapering and toileting, inform parents/guardians when supplies is low (diapers, baby wipes, baby formula, milk)
  • Support infants through nurturing physical contact, including holding and soothing
  • Follow all regulations as listed by the local, city, and state regulators
  • Cantonese or Mandarin proficiency is a plus
Qualifications
  • 24 units ECE/CD including core courses + 16 GE units OR AA or higher degree in ECE or related field with 3 units supervised field experience in ECE setting
  • Hold a minimum of 12 units in ECE/CD from an accredited institution
  • 3 ECE units must be infant-related and experience must be infant-related
  • California Teacher Credential (CTC) Teacher Permit or higher
  • 175 days of 3+ hours per day within 4 years
  • Provide TB and medical clearance
  • Pass fingerprint and federal clearance
  • Active CPR and First Aid certification
  • Active Child Mandated Reporting certificate (or must receive certificate within one day of employment)
  • Active Sexual Harassment Prevention Training certificate
  • Be able to engage in active play and can lift and carry up to 30 lbs
  • Meet all requirements in accordance with Title 5 and Title 22
